Katniss hadn't really thought of it as a goodbye, but it was close enough. It was an acknowledgment of how easily he (or anyone else) could be taken away from her, although the concept of saying goodbye was a little absurd at this point, considering that they might never get back to their own world. And what was the point, really, if they did? The war was over and had been won, at the great personal cost that Kate had mentioned. Was it so horrible of her to want to cling to this reality, where she had time to truly get to know someone who was such a good friend to her, where that friend didn't necessarily have to die in battle?
There were other people she should worry about, like Prim and her mother. Like Peeta and Gale, although Johanna had said that they lived. And the fact that Peeta had worked with her at all meant that Finnick was probably right, didn't it? He had to have come around from hating and fearing her in order to work with her again.
And despite what the Capitol thought, the possibility of romance with either of them really wasn't her highest priority. She could be content with the knowledge that Prim and her mother would live through the bombing (and presumably stay safe in District 13 until the war ended), that Peeta and Gale would survive their mission, that the war would be won and the Hunger Games would end. That was all she'd really wanted, wasn't it? Even the knowing that it would all come to pass was enough to take some of the fight out of her. It was enough to let her focus on this world instead, on the friend (now friends, she supposed, though 'friend' was a new word for her to apply to Johanna Mason and still felt strange) and the possibilities that were available to her here.
"Alright," she said, letting the sadness and goodbyes fall away. Instead, she shifted to almost let him go and rise to her feet, only keeping hold of his hand. Ostensibly to help him up as well, but also because she was allowing herself to need the comfort. It was too late for her to keep him at a distance and avoid getting hurt when he did, after all. "Come on. Let's go to bed."
Whether either of them would sleep, she didn't know. But they had the best chance of it when they had each other's company to guard them from the nightmares.
