There's a meeting of the City Council today, the coverage of which will probably be dominated by a couple of other hot topics, but it's worth highlighting the matters before the Committee on Parks and Recreation: it's been proposed that 56 streets be renamed, all of which are listed (in unhelpful, non-map form) on the green sheet.
I'm sure all of these men and women are worthy of the "honor" of having their names cursed by people who are actually trying to get somewhere and therefore need to know what block they're on; but there's at least one instance of a street being named not after a man or a woman at all, but after the mysterious "PCS," which I can only assume is the not-much-loved mobile company. I suggest an alternative: André-Marie Ampère, 240 years old today, namesake of the ampere, scholar, man of god, all-around inadequate husband and father, and just as relevant to any street in Manhattan as MetroPCS, which was founded by a Texan and appears to get no reception anywhere in the vicinity of a building over ten stories high.
Anyone who wants to go lodge my complaint for me: I will take you to lunch.
