Since the arrival of your last letter, I have investigated and exhausted all other available leads regarding the disappearance and theft of my irreplaceable dog. I assure you that it is with deep regret that nothing I tried and no one I spoke to yielded any possible results. As it stands, the witnesses which I have interviewed are all quite insistent on the fact that the dog's whines were heard from your room, the night before his disappearance.
I would very much like to avoid official legal proceedings if at all possible, as the time they require I simply do not have. You see, there is a race which Shilling is meant to participate in this coming weekend. In fact, I dare say that her attendance is crucial. And while I may believe in your innocence, the simple fact is that involving the police might mean we are both drawn up in their tedious proceedings.
Therefore, I implore you, if you cannot provide Shilling herself, are you in possession of any information or other means that might be useful in the search? I will compensate you dearly if anything you provide proves to be fruitful.
Respectfully Yours,
Lord Anthony Baskerville
