Henry tapped his pen against his bottom lip as he looked over the equations and chemical formulas that littered the papers on his desk. It was the third time he had tried these equations and each time he’d gotten the same answer… or potential answer. Yet he still wasn’t sure if he was right. He thought that he perhaps ought to have Peter run these numbers through the computer to be sure but he was certain that the machine’s programs would agree with him. If he was right… and he was certain he was… he could make what he had done to himself permanent. He would no longer need to consume the formula in order to allow Edward out. At least, he thought that’s what this change in the formula would do. He felt his doubts and worries were entirely justified. He’d thought his original formula was merely going to… excise the more repellent parts of his personality and all it did was give them form and voice. It was entirely possible this change in the formula could turn his body over to Edward forever, leaving him a little more than a passenger in his own mind… or destroyed altogether. One thing he was certain of was they it would not get rid of Edward. Good. Henry sighed, wondering how long Edward had been paying attention. Long enough. “I know what this might do but I have no way of being sure.” Test it. Isn’t that what they do these days? Use rabbits or mice or whatever. “The formula as it stands doesn’t work on animals. It naturally follows that this version won’t either.” So test it on yourself. Henry snorted. It was a fair comment. It’s what he’d done in the beginning after all but… “I can’t be sure what it will do.” Who cares? What happens will happen. “That’s easy for you to say,” Henry said bitterly. “Chances are you will benefit, no matter what.” You think it will make the transformation more under your control. Don’t lie. I know what you’re thinking. Henry sighed and dropped his pen. “Yes, I think that’s what this will do but I can’t guarantee it. I was wrong about what the original formula would do and chances are I’m wrong about this. I also don’t know how we’d change back. If it could occur at all.” He scrubbed his face with one hand. “I… just don’t know.” So test it. We’ll survive. We always do. Henry looked down at the papers on his desk and then abruptly gathered them all up. “Maybe. I’m… going to talk to Peter about this. And… and maybe Dr Banner.” A sense of irritated exasperation lingered in the back of his mind. Right. He ignored Edward and didn’t relax until the sense of him went away. Only then did he shove all the papers into a folder and tuck it into his bag. Yes, he’d talk to Peter and Dr Banner. That would be a better idea than taking any rash action. |
