He hadn't known what was in the vials when he received them in July, though analysis had shown structural similarities to compounds derived from Raven's blood. It had temporarily cured his mutant zebrafish, the ones it didn't kill. It had been a starting point, though he wasn't sure if it was truly a race he was still wont to run. He had said he was done altering his genome, but there were good days to be blue and there were bad days. It was hard to be proud all the time. Not everyone got that, but they didn't have to be furry and blue all the time either. He had learned what the compound was after speaking to Erik, indirectly, he at least learned what it was used for--to suppress mutation, and also to cure. He used the serum himself to walk freely in public. He had used it to help Charles walk at all. He had messed with the cocktail, in the background of work with SWORD, or new mutants, or dying friends over the past few months. But the key had been unlocked by the box that gave him the tool in the first place. The Tesseract had given him. Warning of the dangers of developing Raven's blood, and knowledge of precisely how to. It was a pandora's box of scientific discovery and one he had shoved into a closet to force himself to forget. He should have thrown it away. With the White Event, with the influx of newly powered individuals, Hank had run into a dilemma. Not all were so blessed with abilities as Ororo or Logan or Erik. Perhaps they did not have the complicated adolescence of growing up with powers, but the powers themselves were tricky. Complicated, powerful, and entirely uncontrolled. The thoughts had come back. He had gone back to lab. His work completed, Hank withdrew a fresh syringe from the box on the benchtop. Hank rolled up his sleeve and took off his belt. He slid it around his arm. He pulled it tight around the arm, holding it tightly with his bared fangs. It was difficult, though not impossible finding a vein on an arm covered with fur, but not impossible. He injected the compound. what measure is a man? Hank could help them: the mutants who couldn't pass, who weren't and didn't feel safe, the ones who had never wanted to be anything but normal. He could help them, and he could help himself. |
