Dear Lord Baskerville,
I am writing to you to inform you that I am in receipt of your letter, dated the 16th of September, 2014.
I can certainly understand, since I am in possession of quite an excellent imagination, how you must have felt upon realizing that your treasured greyhound, Shilling, was missing. It must be a terrible thing, indeed, to lose a dog. Having never had a dog, I can’t quite commiserate with you on this dreadful event, but as I have written, I do have an imagination, and I imagine it is terrible.
It must be especially terrible to lose a dog that you put to such work, and who has, apparently brought to you such monetary dividends. I certainly hope that whoever has him understands just how important this dog is to you and returns him very soon so that he can continue filling your coffers with his hard-earned cash.
But more importantly, on to the accusations that you have leveled at myself and my friends. Sir, I must tell you that I am appalled and angered that you would actually accuse me of stealing anything. If you know anything about me, anything at all (having read the books from which I come) then you would understand with perfect clarity that I am the last person who would steal. You have absolutely no proof beyond the word of some unknown stranger.
Sir, I suggest you discover the meaning of the word “libel” and then provide a nicely-worded retraction and apology to me, or I will be forced to provide this letter as evidence to my lawyers.
Respectfully,
Mrs. Anne Blythe
