It was a comfortable habit to fall into. The work was sort of different, Tommy wasn’t having to pay for the roof over his head, and he had to at least pretend that he was planning to stick around for the long term. The world could be worse. The Young Avengers were back together and that meant for the most part Tommy got to be involved in the super heroing that he actually enjoyed. And he didn’t even have to travel, it was a nice benefit. But whether it was padding his wallet or just helping the little old lady cross the street, lunch with David seemed to have easily found its way back into his routine. “And another thing.” Tommy talked around his mouth of noodles as he pointed his chopsticks in David’s direction. “I think we should move in together.” It really had nothing to do with what they had been previously talking about, but the idea had popped into Tommy’s head so it meant that it had to come out as a babble of words. And it was a good idea he thought. Sure living by himself was fine, but it could be cool to have a roommate. It would at least shave about .000005 seconds off of breaking into David’s apartment when he decided to show up. Taken aback, David dropped his spoon into his bowl. Curse Chinese soup spoons and their short handles! Expertly, he used his chopsticks to fish it out. As he wiped the spoon handle on his napkin, David considered the proposal. After years of sharing space -- at home, at Xavier's, on Utopia, in Noh-Varr's ship -- having a whole apartment to himself was both a nice change of pace and incredibly lonely. At least, it was lonely in the rare moments when Tommy wasn't there. "There'd be more space than when you just hang around the apartment I have now," David conceded. Tommy barely resisted the urge to laugh when the spoon dropped. Sure maybe it was a bit out of the blue but Tommy practically lived at David’s place anyway when he wasn’t busy elsewhere. True Tommy hadn’t really lived with anyone since Billy managed to convince him to move in with the Kaplans. Being on his own was sort of par for the course. No one wanted him around and Tommy didn’t feel the need to be around when people were going to do nothing but nag and worry over him. Though honestly the Kaplans were the only ones to ever do the worry thing. But David was different. He wasn’t about to start nagging at Tommy to stay in one place because they both knew it wasn’t going to happen. He wasn’t going to tell Tommy to stop heroing or anything like that. And it might be nice to have a roommate. “Bigger place, still have our own rooms. It’s perfect.” Tommy flashed him a bright grin as he leaned back in his chair. “I see absolutely no downsides at all.” David sat back in his chair contemplatively. "Our aggregate square footage would go down, as compared to two one-bedroom apartments," he pointed out, though it was hardly a real objection when they spent far more time occupying the same space. Though he wouldn't necessarily admit it, he liked having Tommy around. It kept him both from being too bored and too boring. "But I wouldn't be right across the hall from Loki," he added. And while a part of him did enjoy giving Loki dirty looks every time they passed in the corridor or found themselves waiting for the same elevator, it was probably better for his health and sanity if he did not. He could keep tabs on sketchy gods without being neighbors. "Alright," David said, giving the table a decisive thwack. "Let's do it." Tommy pumped his fist up into the air quickly when David finally agreed. Granted it had only taken him about a minute of pondering but that had felt like ages. Tommy’s mind had already decided on it so really there was not much more of a discussion to have on the matter without Tommy getting permanently distracted. His smile continued to brighten as it was settled. “Awesome! Now if we stay on your floor then we will still be stuck near Billy and Loki, but given Loki’s recent boner over my brother might not be the worst thing. Then again I’m pretty sure I have perfected the brother cock block so that isn’t really the most important thing in the world.” He quickly ran through all the floors in his head, shrugging at the end of the split second tally. “I’m not sure if you’ve a preference being near anyone though.” "No preference," David said, shaking his head. He had only been in his SWORD-issued apartment for a few weeks, too soon to put down any roots or establish a real routine. He hadn't even made the requisite trip to Ikea yet. If he was going to move, this was the best time to do it. "I am alright at cockblocking your brother, though," he added, in a self-deprecating and somewhat guilty tone. “Well cockblocking Billy is one of my favorite pastimes. It never gets old.” Leaning back in his chair for a moment Tommy stretched his hands behind his head. The whole situation was a mess but then again when it came to him and his friends their lives always did seem to end up complicated. Not that it was a bad thing. Hey this one was probably one of the smaller world ending problems. Until whatever Loki’s real plan came up anyway. Still David was like the smartest guy he knew, he’d figure it out if anyone did. |
