James idly thumbed his phone, checking it for the umpteenth time to see if Sirius had replied to the messages he had sent earlier that morning instead of tackling the pile of homework that he had to complete for school. When he didn’t see the alert, he resignedly opened the application to double check that he hadn’t forgotten to reply to earlier when Lily had walked into the room. The rakish smile that had been conjured up at the thought of her stole quickly across his face as he glanced over at her, auburn head bent diligently over a textbook, before he fixed his eyes back on his empty phone screen. His smile and good mood disappeared almost instantly. Nothing. He groaned and heaved himself out of his chair, pocketing his phone as he cast his eyes about for his key. Homework ranked far below giving Sirius an earful for not returning a text on his list of things to spend his time doing, and after ruffling Lily’s hair after making an exuse that he had to go walk the dogs, let himself out of the apartment and set off towards Sirius’. His mind whirled as he traced the route, his feet automatically steering him towards his best mate’s place. Things had gone a bit unexpectedly with Sirius and Lily during his time here. Lily was slowly starting to become closer to him, the one he turned to when he found something stupid on the internet or wanted to go explore the town, while Sirius, his best mate, had grown more distant; even more so than the age gap should have accounted for. He could be there one moment, quick with a charming, degrading comment about something James had done, but the next moment he was distant, lost somewhere James couldn’t follow. He rapped his knuckles against Sirius’ door in a warning before trying the door. The lock might have been invented to keep people out, but it stood no chance against James’ wand. “OI!” James called out, shutting the door behind him. He took a few steps deeper into the flat, hazel eyes brewing with a mixture of unease and exasperation as he hunted for his friend. “I know you’re here somewhere, Padfoot. You can hide from a lot of people, but you know better than to try that gimmick with me.” |
