Rachel had really, honestly meant it when she said she was sorry for how announcing her plan had gone. She knew she had hurt people by saying it, and she had never wanted to do that. She was responsible for how they felt; it wasn't some faux "I'm sorry you feel that way" apology. But she'd been totally lying when she'd said she was going to drop the idea of trying to find the Phoenix here. After finishing up the ESD semester, Rachel first spent some time relaxing and clearing her mind of the recent stresses. She couldn't be worrying any more about SHIELD's collapse, HYDRA's rise, the infodumps or the discovery of the trackers (which she'd been ticked with herself for not detecting). She had to be focused on the target. She waited until she could sense that the other X-Mansion residents were either out of the house or asleep. Given certain... strong... reactions to her plan, she didn't want to risk what some of them might do if they found her body absent her mind. Projecting her astral form was something she'd rarely done since the tesseract had taken her here. Of course, she'd done plenty of it in the past, and plenty of projecting others as well. This time felt most akin to when she'd been with the Starjammers, sending her mind across the galaxy and back to Earth in a cry for help. Hadn't gone super awesomely thanks to David Haller's reality warp, temporarily leaving her as the disembodied Revenant, but it eventually got the job done. She wondered what might happen if she tried to use her time-crossing ability-- bounce off some tesseract shielding, run up against nothingness?-- but she didn't wonder enough to risk it when she had other priorities. Years ago during her Excalibur days, when she'd been the Phoenix, Galactus had made a house call to them. He'd decided the Phoenix's existence was too much of a threat to him, and he'd used her friends to get her to back down so he could try to take it from her. Except things got... weird. Somehow, as Galactus began finding the deep bonds between Rachel's essence and the Phoenix Force, the stars started going out. The stars started going out?!?! Somehow light that took thousands and millions of years to reach Earth had begun to disappear which meant it'd be gone before it could exist. Or something else headache-inducing to think about. Galactus tampering with the Phoenix had somehow reached across time to fundamentally affect their universe. (If they were "fictional", she might wonder if Iron Man's splitting of the Phoenix Force was "bad writing". But maybe something about the Phoenix had completely changed after it left her, and the deep bond with the universe had lessened or even disappeared? So much about it had changed.) After locking up her room and settling onto her bed, she sent her mind out from her body to begin the search. Maybe she wold find evidence of the Phoenix. Maybe she would find nothing at all. Either way, the only ones she'd be telling about it were Kitty and Ororo. |
