Sam smiled, almost laughed. He probably would have at least chuckled under other circumstances, but he wasn't as good at letting go of things enough to joke when things got dangerous. Even though he'd imagined the worst, and even though what had happened wasn't too far off from his worst fears, he still hadn't been prepared for the reality of it. The whole landscape of the world they lived in was changing around them, from welcoming and safe to hostile and dangerous. He was used to the feeling of being afraid all the time, expecting danger from every side, but he really hadn't missed it. If not for the fact that there were so many people here he cared about, he might have followed the instinct to pack up everything important and go to ground. It was what they did when the government was after them.
And even if he could bring himself to cut ties, now he wasn't sure if Veronica could. He knew that he didn't want to be the one to ask her to do it.
"I'd like to find as many people in here that we can," he said. "But Jo's my top priority for the moment. We'll start in her room; Wesley said there was some evidence of a struggle in there." She was the main one he hadn't heard anything from. And there was evidence to suggest she'd gotten herself into trouble. He didn't have reasons to worry about anyone else yet. He took a deep breath. "And we can track down Logan, too."
Aside from the inhale preceding it, he managed to deliver that sentence without any sign that it bothered him. He did want to confirm that Logan was safe, because he was important to Veronica, but that didn't mean he actually wanted to be around for it. Not right now, not when there was something going on between them that had confused her. He'd had enough of seeing their chemistry together on screen, and he really wasn't inclined to subject himself to it in person. At the very least, he wanted to put it off for a less sensitive time. But he also didn't want Veronica to go wandering around the tower alone, nor did he particularly want to do that himself. This was better handled together, as a team.
