A date! Miles couldn’t believe it. Not that he couldn’t get himself a date, period, but, he was more so surprised that May had actually asked him.. He wasn’t sure when he started to always feel better when she was around, but he knew he liked her, so this was pretty cool for her to maybe be feeling the same way. Naturally though, Miles was a little conflicted. Between his new memories, he knew he had a girlfriend back home, and he really cared a lot for her, but with being Spider-Man, there was an inherited risk of getting her involved and her ending up hurt, or worse. Plus, she wasn’t here, which could be a good or bad thing. Either way, Miles spent the whole day fidgeting anxiously in class weighing the dilemma on his mind and came to the conclusion that he was here, in a different world in which he may never return from. It’d be okay to move on. Hopefully. After school, Miles tried to pass the time by watching some TV, but 6:30 wasn’t coming soon enough, and he kept eyeing at the time on his phone until it was close enough to get ready. He had decided that it would be the gentleman’s thing to do by “picking her up.” He didn’t exactly have a car, let alone a driver’s license, but he did make the trek all the way to the Spider House to meet her so they could both head to the theatre nearby. Miles tried to put together some nice clothes for the evening, but he hadn’t exactly been investing his money on suits and ties. Black jeans, his usual sneakers, and a simple plain tee along with his fitted charcoal hoodie was all he could really come up with. He was a little nervous on the approach to the House of Spiders, mainly because he wasn’t exactly sure what to say to anyone other than May if they answered the door. Clearing his throat lightly and inhaling deeply, Miles pushed the air through his lips and let his fingers curl to knock against the door of the Spider house, fidgeting slightly from one foot to the other as he waited for someone to open it. ---- May had a romantic mess back home, as well. She was dating JJ-- J. Jonah Jameson’s grandson. Also known as The Buzz, a crime fighter that was more a shade of grey. That was the closest thing to a normal relationship she had, because he was a crime fighter, too. It was difficult to disappear on guys, turn down their offers for dates because she had to patrol. Which was one of the reasons she liked Miles. He understood it. That and he was fun to play Street Fighter with. She started to get butterflies in her stomach around him one day. It just happened gently one day, realizing she liked liked him. Since they were friends first, it was much easier to ask him out than she thought. The “love letter” thing didn’t work out (and she was horrified to know Pietro Maximoff saw the letter!!) Also, a movie was nice neutral territory. You can’t talk during a movie (and if he did, she’d know they were never meant to be). Pizza afterwards gave them something to talk about-- the movie. Hopefully it didn’t suck. When there was a knock on the door, May went tearing towards it. “I GOT IT I GOT IT I GOT IT!!” could be heard through the door. She didn’t want her mom to know-- MJ would probably want her to put on something nicer (incidentally, May was dressed nearly the same as Miles, except with a red hoodie and her hair in two braids). The door was yanked open, “Hi! Hi. Um. Ready?” She glanced over her shoulder and quickly closed the door behind her. “I’m not ashamed of you I just don’t want them to tease us.” ---- The date idea was perfect. Miles really wanted to see the movie anyways, if anything, he knew he wanted to see it in place of his best friend at home who was pretty much the biggest Lego fan he knew. He was going to go by himself, but, that seemed a little too depressing, even for him, so when May suggested it, it really was a great idea, plus, it was even better, because it was with her. Every time they had the opportunity to hang out, he found himself growing more and more comfortable around her. He was still a little reserved when it came to interacting with all of the other spider people, except for JD, and, hypothetically, Jess, since she was from his world, even if she didn't know who he was. He wondered whether or not this was a good idea, to get invested in someone when there was the risk of disappearing, but, he really liked being around May. She made him feel good about things, so the risk was worth it. He could hear her yelling in the house and let loose a little smirk, quickly turning it back into a stoic expression as she swiftly opened the door and made her exit. The sooner the door closed, the better. It already felt like there were eyes all over them, and he hadn't been blind to the fact she'd already told Peter AND Kaine on the network about their date. So yeah, the sooner they got away from the house, the less pressure there'd be for both of them. When he actually got to take a look at her, he smiled slightly, more relieved than anything that he wasn't under dressed. It was movies and pizza after all, not a black tie event. "Don't worry," he said a little more softer than normal, fairly paranoid that someone from inside the house was going to try and eavesdrop. Everyone there knew everyone's business, it was like how he imagined a frat house. "We'd better get going anyways, the show'll start in about 30 minutes." He turned a bit to head off the stoop, figuring they'd just take a bus to the theatre facility. "So.... how was your day?" Hands were stuffed into the pockets of his hoodie as they began their trek. ---- May pulled her hood up over her head and crossed her arms as she walked. She felt weird not having her webshooters on her wrists. Nope, no webshooters, they would have a normal day and a normal date and if a bad guy comes along she’s going to yell at them for ruining it. She laughed softly at his inquiry. What a sweet boy~. “My day was fine, but not much has happened since I saw you in Bio.” May gently bumped him with her shoulder-- they were almost exactly the same height and for some strange reason that made her blush. Crushes make you think weird things. The worst part of her day already happened, when tumblr went down for about 30 seconds. What a scare. So technically the date would have to be the best part of her day. “How was your day?” ---- They really did think fairly similarly on these matters, because Miles felt pretty naked without his suit on underneath his clothes. At least he could always use his camouflage if they ran into problems, but, he was really, really, really hoping today could just be a normal day between two friends getting to know each other a little better than before. The little bump made him cock a lopsided grin as he kept his gaze down on the ground, adjusting his balance accordingly as to not fall over. "Bio was pretty boring today, wasn't it?" Miles hadn't paid attention to a single thing that was going on, lost between thoughts of home and thoughts of May. "Fine, didn't really do anything," he said softly with a little shrug of his shoulders. Miles kept to himself a lot, and though he could hold a conversation, he always seemed a little distracted. "J.D.'s staying with us for a little bit. Guess you guys can be pretty noisy," he looked up to May, the small smile on his face letting her know he was joking.... To an extent, anyways. He was pretty okay with having stayed in the Tower with Jess, they had a good rapport together and nothing crazy ever happened except for that Applianceocalypse the other week. ---- “It’s weird, but yeah. You’d think it would be more interesting since we’re being taught by the little dude that’s obsessed with Godzilla.” May’s lips made a thin line at the mention of JD staying with them. She wasn’t sure what was going on with her clone-sister-dad. It must be something rough, if she was abandoning the Web Site (man she hoped that name would catch on). May nodded, “We’re very noisy.” That was really the only explanation she had at the moment. “Are you ready to ride mass transit with Mayday Parker,” May asked, with the emphasis making it more like she was asking if he was READY TO ROCK?? ---- “I’d rather learn about Godzilla than cellular respiration,” he said with a little eye roll. Peter Parker was notoriously recognized for his smarts. Miles? Not exactly on the track to go to college before turning 16, let alone helping out a college professor as a TA like JD. He got good grades through hard work, but as of the past week or so, he’d been losing interest in school. At least with Bio, May was there to keep him entertained in the very least. As May spoke, he half expected her to pose like some Sailor Moon character about to transform, and smiled. “You’re so weird sometimes,” he offered with a laugh and a shake of the head as they finally made it to the bus stop. The ride itself was uneventful, filled with a little conversation here and there about their daily lives. Plus, it wasn’t long before they reached the street near the complex anyways, so the ride was short. Miles insisted on paying for tonight’s show (and you bet your web cartridges he was going to try and pay for dinner too!), but let May pick out the seats. He wasn’t exactly picky on the matter, but the place was getting kind of full. Once they sat down and the theatre grew dark, Miles looked to May and smiled. They’d gone to the movies before, this wasn’t a new experience by any means, but this was a date, and every look, every accidental touch, meant something a little more in this new light. He kept quiet throughout the show, torn between being impressed that the movie was actually good and his memories of Ganke being triggered by the various Lego sets he knew he had and would want after this. And hey, somehow through the movie Miles slipped his arm around the top of May’s seat so she could lean into him…. You know. If she wanted to. ----- “I am so weird all the time, you only notice it sometimes.” May would have fought him on paying for her own stuff-- even if it was a date! But she was pretty broke as of late. Christmas, then her parent’s wedding (she had to buy new shoes and everything). The Parkers weren’t the richest of people, that’s why so many of them were crammed into one house! The movie was actually pretty charming and when she’d laugh at the jokes, she’d lean into Miles. So when his arm slid over her seat, it made for the perfect opportunity. As the credits started to roll and the lights came up, May held her arms out. “We can’t go! We have to watch the credits!” Then she sat back and put her head on Miles’ shoulder. Watching the credits was just a little quirk of hers but it also gave them a moment of quiet time as the theater emptied. “Psst,” she whispered, unnecessarily, “this is nice.” ---- There were perks to having a part time job. This world's Peter Parker had recommended his old delivery job, and who better to take over a service like that than another webslinger? The stipend was nice, but Miles felt really bad for using someone else's money, and was squirreling it away to help Jess out with whatever they needed as a kind of pseudo-family. The cash he made from deliveries? That was his, and he was more than happy to spend it on movies with May. By the end of the film, he was sure he'd want to see it again, and at least 20 more times with Ganke. Then again, after she rested her head against him, there was that warming feeling flooding over his cheeks, and, he was pretty sure he could do this about a hundred more times with May. "I never leave until the lights are on. There's always something at the end, you know?" It was hard to contain the way the corner of his lips seemed in constant battle of being turned upwards. Even with the lights on and the theatre nearly empty, he looked down when May whispered, nodding in agreement. "We could just stay here for a few more minutes," he offered, keeping his voice down as the last patron took their leave and the screen shut down completely. His arm by now was wrapped around her shoulder, keeping her comfortably close. ----- May’s ears were probably turning scarlet in the dark. She was comfortable but giddy. At ease but anxious. There was no rush like swinging through the city, but being around someone you like liked was close to it. As they left the theater, May took Miles’ hand. She swung their hands back and forth, the way a little kid might. Being silly covered up any chance at being awkward. “Okay, pop quiz, hot shot,” Either a reference to the classic Speed or picking up some of her mom’s penchant for nicknames, “Let’s say you could only have two toppings on your pizza pie for the rest of your life, what are they? For me, I’d say pepperoni, that’s easy. Going for a curveball here, but … I think olives. Black, not green. No green on my pizza, sir.” ---- He didn't mind the hand holding in the least. It was pretty great that she was comfortable enough with him to do it in the first place, and bold enough to initiate the contact. Was there anything that this girl wasn't capable of? Sure, she's the daughter of heroes, a hero herself, but she's also a thief, what with all those little gestures that kept stealing parts of his heart. The pop quiz thing had him a little nervous initially: there was a plethora of topics she could have asked about... But pizza? Yeah, he could definitely answer that with a smile. "Green doesn't belong on pizza, and pepperoni is a must, so, I guess we already know what we're ordering tonight," he offered with a little laugh. "My second choice would be mushrooms. Not canned, though, those are gross." Canned mushrooms? Yeuch! "Blame the Hobbit in me." So what if some of his life choices were made because of something Tolkien wrote? "Okay, so, pop quiz for you: if you could live in one video game forever, kind of like being sucked into this world, which would it be? I think I'd go with Final Fantasy X. Blitzball is pretty cool..." ---- “Right! No greens!” May hummed as she thought of an answer to his question. “Pokemon! Vern would be like a Herdier or a Growlithe. He’d be so cute and he’d have … powers of some sort. He and mom are left out of the whole powers pool.” She released his hand long enough to open the door to the pizza place. “Holy crap, they got a pinball machine!” ---- There was a little chuckle at the thought of Vern in some sort of Growlithe costume trying to be bigger and bolder than he actually was. "That'd be pretty cool. And hey, some of the best people I know don't have powers and are way stronger than I could ever be." He was referring to his best friend, the one that stayed by his side despite, well, everything. He held the door she opened and followed inside, scanning around the place just out of habit. Anytime he wanted to go do something fun, trouble always seemed to show up, so, you can't blame a guy for wanting to scout and make sure everything was ok. Digging into his pocket, Miles pulled out a few things of change, "I don't think there's enough quarters, but, here," he offered her the change. "Are you any good at pinball? I mean, I know you know the Konami code well enough, but there's no cheats in pinball." There were a little grin on his face as he let both hands rest in the pockets of his jeans again, rocking back on the heels of his sneakers. Was that a challenge? You bet your spidey bum it was! ---- “Seriously, my mom once took on the Goblin armed with nothing more than a lamp. She’s pretty badass.” May took his change and added a pocketful of her own. “It’s fun, but I don’t know how good I am at it. …” She trailed off, feeding the quarters into the machine. “This is fun, we should do it again.” May was messing with the arms of the machine, attempting to sound as casual as possible. Second date is a go, second date is a go! ---- “A lamp? Woah… Remind me not to get on her bad side.” His world’s MJ was pretty cool, but he didn’t really know her enough to ever think she was capable of that. Dating Katie was one thing, no superhero parents; dating May was a whole new world and he definitely had no Genie to help him out. He watched her play the game from off to the side, occasionally glancing up to watch her facial expressions as he jammed away at the buttons. We should do it again was pretty much what he was thinking. “Yeah, no doubt. Maybe next week or something. You should come over, we can rent some movies and I can totally kick your butt at Guilty Gear.” Hanging out with May was pretty much the easiest, most relaxing thing he’d been able to do since the memory dump, and for that, he was grateful. Things were going to be okay here, they were both making the best of a different world. --- |
