It is an interesting choice of gift that the blue box chose to send to me. The Book of Shartan. I am grateful for it, for it was a gift from Hawke and the book we used when he taught me to read and write.
It did bring back the memories of the day he gave it to me. He was so pleased to have found such an appropriate gift for me and he looked very much like a puppy waiting for a pat on the head for a successful retrieval. Instead I kicked him. Metaphorically, not literally. I regret my words that day. Hawke can be strangely innocent in some ways and I should have expected that it would not occur to him that the magisters of the Tevinter Imperium would never teach their slaves to read and write.
A lesser man than Hawke would have walked out on me for the things I said. Hawke merely gave me the look of a kicked puppy and offered to teach me. No strings attached. No expectations of anything in return. And in spite of all that had happened between us. I was not fool enough to kick him again.
