Who: Sulu & Uhura
When: Backdated to October 19
Where: The celebration of TOS Kirk and Spock
What: Talking/hanging out
Rating: G
Sulu stood near the window trying not to look as if he was staring at her. Although he was. Ever since he’d arrived at the celebration for Kirk and Spock (or Kirk One and Spock One as he called them in his head) he’d been aware of Uhura. She looked beautiful and he knew this was the perfect time to tell her that and to ask her to dinner. Pavel had been encouraging him and while he’d come close to doing it, he just hadn’t been able to get up the nerve. Sulu would be the first to admit that he was not good with women. At least not asking them out. Once he did, he was fine but he was always afraid that he’d put his foot in his mouth or do something stupid. Like trip. Which had actually happened to him once. It was especially bad when it was someone he really liked and he really liked Uhura. He’d known her ever since the Academy but they’d been in different tracks and while they shared a few friends, he didn’t see her as often as he’d like. By the time their paths had begun to cross on a regular basis, she’d been dating Spock and he was sure his chance was gone. Things seemed pretty serious to him although he never asked when they were on the Enterprise and then suddenly here they were and she wasn’t dating Spock any more. So what was Sulu’s excuse now? “Okay Hikaru, you can do this,” he said to himself as he took a deep breath and walked over to where Uhura was standing talking to Christine. He hesitated for a minute when Christine walked off and knew this was his chance so before he could talk himself out of it, he approached Uhura and stopped next to her. “Hello,” he said with a smile. “You look lovely this evening. Enjoying the reception?” Uhura had spent most of the evening talking to Christine and Carol. She was glad that she got to witness the celebration between the other world Kirk and Spock, but she was more glad that she got to spend time with all her friends at one time for a fun and happy occasion. Sure she’d seen almost all of them the previous night at the Starfleet meeting, but that was different. After Christine walked away, Uhura was left by herself only briefly before Hikaru came over. “Hello, and thank you,” she replied, blushing a little at the compliment she received. She had spent the day with the rest of the women from Starfleet to find a dress to wear to the occasion and she had received several compliments on her appearance. “You look very nice as well.” She took a sip from the drink she had in her hand. “I am. This has been quite a reception. Are you enjoying it?” “I am. It’s always nice to see someone as happy as they are.” Sulu didn’t know the two men that well but it was easy to see that they cared about each other. “and thank you. I don’t dress up very often so this might be the only time you see me in a suit for a while.” He smiled at her. For the time being, he was working at a florist near Potts Tower while he made up his mind about SHIELD. After last night’s presentation, he was also considering applying at Stark Industries but for now, he at least had a source of income so that he could do something such as buy a new suit. Uhura nodded her head. “It is very nice. I hope to have what they have someday.” She had been happy, very happy, back in her own world with Spock. Here, it was just too difficult and Uhura had felt out of place and unhappy when she wasn’t spending time with people she knew. After her breakup with Spock, everything seemed to come together and Uhura was happier now than when she had first arrived. She still missed her relationship with Spock some days, but it was all for the best. “What a shame. The suit will be missed. Oh, have you decided on where you’ll work?” Uhura asked. She hadn’t talked to him recently and she was curious if he had decided. “Well I’m not staying at the florist which is where I’ve been working,” Sulu replied with a laugh. “after last night though I’ve pretty much decided to apply at Stark Industries. I’ve been doing some reading on their aviation division, they do a lot of work with navigation systems, I think I’d be happier there than at SHIELD.” He’d been tossing both places back and forth in his mind but he couldn’t see himself as a field agent. “I’m not particularly sure I want to get involved with the whole aerospace thing but if I change my mind, I’ll already be there so we’ll see.” He shrugged. “How do you like teaching?” “You should go where ever you think you’ll be happiest. It’s pretty important, especially here, to find something that makes you happy. Besides, there is probably far less paperwork at Stark compared to SHIELD.” Uhura never saw anyone complain about Stark Industries, but people did complain a lot about the amount of paperwork and training involved with SHIELD. “I love it. If Starfleet didn’t exist, I can see myself as a teacher. You know, Hoshi Sato, the communications officer for the NX-01 Enterprise was a teacher as well.” “I don’t like paperwork so that might be the best choice,” he grinned. “and I think I’ll be happiest working with what I know best. I like working at the florist part time but I just took the job so I could have some income while I thought it over.” Sulu could make a quick decision when he had to but if he was going to be here for any length of time, he knew he would have to find something full time. And who knew how long he’d be here. “I did know that about Hoshi Sato actually. I’m glad you’re enjoying it. I knew you’d make a good teacher.” Uhura smiled. "Yes, the paperwork is the killer! So how did you get into the floral business?" Uhura didn't know too much about Hikaru and she was curious why he worked for a florist here. "Thanks." “I actually have a degree in botany as well as astrophysics” he said. “I love working with plants although I’m more comfortable growing them or studying them than selling them but it was a way to earn some money while I checked out my other options. When I was here before I apparently left Pavel a plant that I’ve had to revive.” Sulu laughed. He’d taken a lot of teasing about his love of plants over the years but he couldn’t help it, they fascinated him. "Oh that's very interesting. I take it Pavel almost killed the plant you left before?" Uhura laughed as well. "You are multi-talented. That's really and truly interesting. If I ever get plants, I'll definitely know who to come ask if they start to die." “He did almost kill it,” Sulu joined in her laughter. “Pavel said he tried everything but he just couldn’t get it to live. If I’d left him a warp core or a transporter, he would have had it working in two hours.” He shook his head. “Pavel amazes me sometimes. I told him I wish I knew just a little of what he’s already forgotten and he’s only eighteen.” “Yes, he would have and you know if he had a transporter, we’d all be using it.” Uhura missed the convenience of the transporter some days, but she knew that Pavel had been working on it and couldn’t remember if it was functioning yet. “He amazes me too. I’m glad he’s here. I’m glad most everyone is here.” It was the perfect opening and for once in his life, Sulu didn’t hesitate to take it. “Pavel told me about you and Spock. I’m sorry to hear it.” Actually he wasn’t that sorry since it meant he might have a chance with Uhura but he wasn’t going to say that to her. “I know you’d been together a while.” “Oh, that’s right you weren’t here when it happened. It’s okay. It was for the best.” Uhura smiled. “Thank you, though. That’s sweet of you to say.” |
