</center> Cristina liked to think that it took a lot to surprise her. Even if something did catch her off guard, she wasn’t about to let anyone know about it. Simon’s text though? That definitely caught her off guard. She’d been sitting on the side of her tub clipping her toenails when her phone went off and nearly cut her pinky toe when she saw who it was. It wasn’t that she didn’t like Simon, he was really okay when he loosened up although that didn’t happen very often but she sure as hell didn’t expect him to invite her to his ex-girlfriend’s birthday party. As his date because why else was he asking her? Or was Kaylee his ex-girlfriend? With everyone popping in and out from different times, she only knew what she’d seen on the show and in the movie. Which certainly pointed to the fact that something had gone down between them and also lost her twenty bucks because she’d bet Meredith that Simon was gay. Which he obviously wasn’t. He also looked damn fine without a shirt but Cristina wasn’t going to tell him that. She told him yes since she didn’t have plans plus she figured she owed him one for delivering Meredith’s baby. If she was being honest with herself (which she rarely was) Cristina said yes because she wanted to and it was kind of flattering that he’d thought of her. From what she’d gathered, it wasn’t going to be fancy so she went with the casual funky look which was pretty much all she owned anyway. Cristina loved shopping in thrift stores and most of her wardrobe came from there aside from her scrubs and the bridesmaid dress she had arrived in. That was definitely not an option. Simon arrived right on time which didn’t surprise her in the least and she couldn’t help but laugh at the look on his face when he saw her. He’d never seen her in anything other than scrubs and Cristina kept teasing him all night about how shocked he looked. The party was nice and she surprised herself by having a good time. Simon seemed to be having a good time too and though she was trying not to act like she cared, she had been worried about him seeing Kaylee with someone else. He seemed fine though and after the party when they got back to her apartment, Cristina unlocked the door and turned around to face him. “Wanna come in for a little bit? The place is a mess, I’d apologize but I’m a slob so it is what it is.” Simon was unsurprisingly wearing his usual outfit of slacks, shirt and a vest for that evening though he did make an effort to look nice. He wasn’t sure exactly why he liked Cristina enough to bring her to an event like this, normally he would have said that she would have annoyed the hell out of him and that was that - that wasn’t to say she didn’t annoy him but he found himself liking it for some strange reason. Still he had brought her to the party and while he was worried it would turn into something awkward, thankfully it didn’t. The evening went well and the others didn’t react too surprised to him bringing someone with him - he had wondered how Kaylee would take it but she didn’t seem upset but then she had thrown the same thing at him in some ways. Not completely but still. Escorting Cristina back home as was the right thing to do he was slightly surprised when she invited him in. “I’d like that, thank you and don’t worry about the mess,” he told her. “Great,” she said and entered the apartment which was as she had warned him a mess. Although it wasn’t nearly as bad as it had been at other times. “Have a seat,” she said and picked up a pile of clean towels (yes she’d actually done the laundry) and motioned toward the couch. “Do you want something to drink? I’ve got water and....well water. I need to go to the store.” Cristina put the towels on the kitchen table and got two bottles of water out of the refrigerator and went to join Simon on the couch. “So I gotta ask you. The guy with your sister? She said his name was Fiver? Like the rabbit in the book? Or is he the rabbit from the book?” Anything was possible and he’d seemed nice enough even if he looked like he wanted to run out the door half the time. It was a mess but somehow he didn't mind, it added character and he wasn't all that surprised. Truthfully it wasn't a big a mess as he expected. "A water is fine thank you," he said with a smile. He wasn't surprised she asked that - a lot of people were curious about Fiver and the fact he was a rabbit. "I don't know anything about a book," he told her. "I would say it was the same though as he did use to be a rabbit as odd as it might be." He did like Fiver and he made River happy which to Simon was the main thing. “It’s a book,” she confirmed. “Watership Down. I read it in high school. He seems nice.” Nothing about this place really surprised Cristina anymore. She was learning to just accept things and try not to think too hard about it. Taking a sip of her water, she watched him out of the corner of her eye for a moment and then said “You okay? With the whole ex-girlfriend thing?” Cristina wasn’t too sure how she would have felt if she’d been in his shoes but he’d seemed remarkably fine. In fact she found it hard to believe that anything ever rattled him. “That would be it, I remember him mentioning something called Watership Down before as their new home or something?” he shrugged. He had heard him telling River so he wasn’t exactly sure what the details of it were exactly but it sounded about right from what he could remember from their conversation. “He is, if a bit jumpy. I suppose being turned into a human would do that to you though,” he mused. He nodded. “I am, took me awhile and while I still care for her I know she does love Lee and I want her to be happy which she is. That was the main thing that got me to accept the two of them though it was a surprise.” She couldn’t imagine being something else and then becoming a human. It was crazy so she supposed that Fiver had a reason to be a little jittery. “Well at least he’s nice to River. Like you said, that’s the important part.” Cristina liked Simon’s sister, she seemed like a good kid and she’d certainly been through hell. She listened to his words about Kaylee and took a sip of her water, watching his face. “Really? I just...well I guess I’m not that big hearted. I wouldn’t have been able to do what you did tonight. No way.” Cristina liked to think she didn’t have a softer side but she did and that part would definitely not have been able to go to a party where someone she’d loved was with another person. “but I have to hand it to you. It’s good that you can feel that way.” “Which is the main thing, so many people judge River on actions that she can’t control it really isn’t fair to her. Fiver just doesn’t care or really understand a lot of the time I think. Either way it is good for both of them. He’s opened up a lot actually if you can believe it,” he said with a shake of his head. “It was hard, especially at first,” he admitted to her. “They were together long before I got here and while it still surprises me at times there is nothing that can be done about it,” he shrugged. Yes it still hurt at times but he wouldn’t deny that Kaylee was happy and try to break them up, he just wasn’t that sort of person. Cristina took another sip of her water as she listened to Simon. He really was a cool guy she thought which brought to mind the question of why he was hanging out with her. “Well I don’t know the guy she’s with now but it’s her loss.” She shrugged and killed the rest of her water, then sat the bottle on the table. “I have to ask you something though. Do you ever get upset about anything? You’re always so calm and shit. How do you do that? It’s like nothing gets to you. I kind of envy that.” While she might present a different face to the rest of the world, things did get to Cristina and she wasn’t shy about letting people know it. Simon felt himself blushing slightly at that comment and just shrugged instead of saying anything - for once he had no idea what to say. “After all that I’ve been through I’m very good at hiding what I am feeling,” he said with a shrug. It was true though, growing up with his parents and then on the run meant he hid his emotions well - not that he was one to show them easily to begin with for that matter. Simon had always been calm and collected when it came to situations. “Plus keeping them under control means I can think logically and the like in tense situations. I don’t want to freak out in a middle of a life saving situation.” He sounded a great deal like her, Cristina thought and found that the idea surprised her. She wouldn’t have thought they’d be similar but in that respect they were. The difference was that she hid behind her sarcastic sense of humor while Simon simply appeared detached. “You sound like me,” she finally said. “I know I come off as a bitch. Believe I’ve been told that more than once and it doesn’t bother me but you’re right, keeping your emotions in check does help you keep it together when something goes wrong.” The other extreme was keeping them so controlled that you stopped being able to feel anything and Cristina had certainly been guilty of that. “Exactly,” he said with a nod. “In our line of work it is the only way to survive truthfully.” That was something Simon had learned early enough in medical school and something he kept on practicing even today. Plus on Serenity if he didn’t keep himself calm he would have been in trouble seeing his friends and family injured in anyway. He didn’t realise but he had moved closer towards Christina while they were talking, leaning forward and resting his chin on his right elbow. “People don’t get that,” she said. “you can’t get emotionally attached or you’ll go crazy. Some of my friends don’t get that. One of them actually fell in love with a patient. It was nuts.” Christina shook her head. Denny had changed all their lives even though Izzie was the one who had loved and lost him. She hadn’t agreed with Izzie’s choices in that matter but in the end Cristina has supported her, they all had, because even though she tried not to show it, Cristina did care about her friends. It suddenly hit her that Simon was closer to her than he’d been before. How had that happened? One of them, maybe both of them, had moved and she was surprised to find herself looking directly into his eyes as she spoke. He had pretty eyes too she thought and even though part of her wanted to look away, she couldn’t. “No, I would never do that. Getting attached especially falling in love can be disastrous. Of course it is worse when your patients are the ones with a low chance of survival,” he said with a shrug. “Still it is never a good idea,” he agreed. “Um,” he finally said noticing her properly for the first time. “Um what?” she asked, still looking at him. Maybe it was possible for him to get flustered, she thought because he sure as hell looked flustered right now. Which amused the crap out of her. Simon usually wasn’t all that ineloquent when it came to speaking but for some reason it just failed then. He blushed slightly before shrugging. On a whim, he had no idea why he did it he moved in and kissed her. For a minute Cristina had no idea what to do. She certainly hadn’t expected him to kiss her but to her surprise, she didn’t mind. Moving a little closer, she laid her hand on his shoulder and kissed him back, her lips parting beneath his on their own accord. She had to hand it to him, he might seem a little uptight but he definitely knew how to kiss which was a very pleasant surprise. Truthfully Simon didn’t know what he was doing, it just happened. Still once it had started he didn’t stop. It felt, right, it felt natural and he would only stop if Christina told him too/ Though by the look of it she wasn’t going to. She had no intentions of stopping him, she wasn’t a fool after all. Instead she slid her hand into his hair and pulled him closer. For a brief moment she felt guilty since she’d just broken up with Owen but hell he wasn’t here, was he? Besides it was nice kissing someone who wasn’t trying to eat her face. Cristina had no clue how long they sat there kissing until she realized she needed to breath and she pulled away. It took a moment to gather herself and she looked at him. “Okay I was wrong, you do let loose every now and then.” Simon couldn’t help but laugh at her comment. He knew she meant it in a nice way - nice for her and it was true, he didn’t often relax. Being on the run and having to look after himself and River didn’t allow for much of that. Instead of replying though he just leant in and kissed her again. |
