Who: Lois and Clark
When: Midday, 12/13/12
Where: The Tower then City Hall
What: THEY'RE GETTING MARRIED
Rating: Low

Lois had been standing in front of the mirror for nearly half an hour, trying on her wedding dress, then a simpler dress, then her wedding dress again, or a pant suit. A wedding dress for a courthouse wedding just seemed like such overkill. But she didn't mind overkill. Why not make it a big splash? It would be a riot for these people who thought they were fictional. Lois Lane and Clark Kent gettin' hitched at the courthouse because their wedding on that TV show got interrupted. Hilarious.

She was in one of her new work outfits, a charcoal pencil skirt with a white blouse. She'd done her hair up in a similar fashion to her wedding hair, but a less labor intensive. Her teardrop earrings were back in her ears, and her eyes were properly accented with a daytime smoky eye. She felt fit for a courthouse wedding. Just the shoes left.

Wearing one red shoe and one silver shoe she went looking for her groom. "Smallville, which shoe?" She modeled one side, then the other, accenting each shoe.

Clark chose a simple black suit and blue tie. He stuck his glasses on, pushing them up his nose, then turned when Lois walked out of the bedroom. "Red," he said without a second thought. "Are you almost ready? Chris from copy at the Bugle is going to meet us there on his lunch so we have a witness. He said he thought it was amusing that our parents are such Superman fans and then we managed to find each other in real life. I didn't bother correcting him. Figured it was easier that way."

He pulled his long coat on and picked up hers, holding it out for her.

Lois stepped back into the room to put on the second red shoe and walked over to him to let him put her coat on her. "If our parents actually did that, I'd kill them. Lucky for them they didn't know any better." She smiled at him and straightened the collar on his coat. "Ready?"

Clark grinned and held the door open for her as he bent down to give her a quick kiss. "Your transportation options," he said, as they walked down the hall toward the elevator bank. "One: taxi. Two, subway, though I'm fairly certain there's no direct route. Three, bus. Four, walking. And five --" He lifted his shoulders then punched the down on the elevator. "Me."

Lois looked up at him and smiled. She loved the way he looked in a suit—great thing about their jobs was she got to see it on a regular basis—but he looked so happy. So full of life. They were getting married. The butterflies were gone, and surely nothing could prevent them this time.

She brushed his hair away from his face and grinned. "I always prefer number five."

Clark slid an arm casually around her shoulders and stepped into the elevator with her. "I think I can handle that." He still hadn't really voiced his concern about his secret being out there in the open. It hadn't seemed like SHIELD had done anything at all about restricting the information. He knew it had been a long shot -- the internet here as as public a space as it was back home -- but he had had to try. He rubbed the back of his neck and looked at her.

She looked back at him and smiled, leaning into him. It was so easy to feel safe here with Clark around. Without him—well, she was very glad she had him.

When the elevator got to the bottom, she leaned into him and clamped her hand into the one he had slung around her shoulder, walking off the elevator, through the lobby, and onto the street. "So, what's our method? Leaping tall buildings, speeding, or working on that whole flying thing?"

Slightly wide-eyed, he shook his head. "I'm not taking you to any kind of flying until I know what I'm doing. Or, you know, until I know how to fly." The last part was a bit muttering to himself, but he was sure she could hear him. Really, he wasn't sure he could ever fly. He thought he might have to talk to Kara -- one of the two Karas (or both) -- about it.

"I was just going to grab you and run," Clark admitted. "You know, blur past everyone, right?"

Lois laughed. She loved when he sounded so concerned. It was just–adorable. But in a manly sort of way. "I didn't think you'd want to fly, but I figured I'd give you a hard time. But please, grab and run away." She pulled herself closer to him, ready to cling.

Clark laughed and tugged her around the side of the building, out of the way and sight of everyone on the street. He slid his arms comfortably around Lois then super-sped away, taking the cut he'd mapped out on the computer to city hall. He stopped them just moments later in an alleyway, narrow between buildings just a few blocks away from city hall.

He stepped back from her and slid his hand back in hers. "I probably messed up your hair there, Lo. Sorry about that. I'll give you a few seconds in the ladies room to fix it before we see a judge. Or, you know, if the line's really long, you'll have all the time you want."

"How dare you, Smallville!" She grinned and reached in her purse for her compact, giving her hair a quick once-over. Actually, the windswept look worked well with the rest of ther loose curls. She checked to make sure it was still properly pinned in the back and smiled at him. "I think you're off the hook.

She slid her hand back into his and led them around the corner. She glanced at the buildings around them, looking for one that looked like city hall, but didn't have a good enough angle. Then she noticed the street sign that pointed to the right and followed. Just as they reached the bottom steps, she gasped. "Smallville! Should we get married on a 13th? I mean, Our anniversary will fall on Friday the 13ths, and that must be bad luck. We should've done it yesterday, had some 12-12-12 luck going on."

Clark gave Lois a look. "I don't think it matters what day we get married, Lois," he said as he walked them toward city hall. "We wouldn't have gotten married anyway had the tesseract not grabbed us, so anything's better than it not happening at all, right?" That's right, Clark, he thought to himself, put a better spin on it. He'd watched the finale of their TV show just the other day, actually, just to check and see what their wedding would have looked like. Of course, he was shocked to see it hadn't happened. Shocked even more to see what did happen.

"Let's choose not to believe in superstitions. Today's as good a day as yesterday and as good as tomorrow, too. We're here, we have the license, we have a witness waiting for us. Let's just do it."

"What do you mean we wouldn't have gotten married? Of course we would've gotten married." She frowned as they walked into the courthouse. How did he know that? Granted, she'd be avoiding their show and had been watching and reading up on every other fictional version of Clark Kent and Lois Lane there were instead—she liked theirs the best, obviously. Especially since that new one coming out totally gipped her on trailer time. A second and a half? Really? She had to be more important than that.

Regardless of what he meant, he was right. No superstitions. Just—do it. She wanted to be his wife, and that's all there was to it. "Right. We're here. We just need to find the right floor, the right hallway, and our witness, and this is it. We'll be husband and wife. This is—not scary at all." Well, maybe a little.

"I watched the show," he said. "Just the last episode, because I heard that's where we came from. The finale. We didn't actually get married in the episode. So we have a one up on our television alter egos." Clark grinned down at her. But then she started in on excuses, or worrying, or something like that. He stopped walking.

"Lois, stop it. We have everything set, and I know where I'm going. Are we going to do this or not?"

"Why don't we get—never mind, we can talk about it later."

She took a deep breath and rubbed his shoulders. "We're doing this. I didn't meant to sound like we aren't. It was more just self-reassurance." She leaned up and rubbed his nose against hers and smiled. "I really, really need to be Mrs. Kent right now. So—lead the way."

It was better not to explain it now, but he figured he'd have to later. Even if he didn't really understand it all that well himself. He glanced at her then kissed her softly. "So long as you're sure. You've been back and forth for a while now, and I don't want to do anything that you don't want to do."

"Smallville, my hesitation has never, ever, been about whether or not I wanted to marry you. I do so desperately want to. And that is all behind us. We're moving forward, and we're moving forward together. We need each other."

She smiled at him and nudged his shoulder, seeing their coworker at the end of the hall and waving at him. "We've got this. We're ready."

Clark wasn't sure then what her hesitancy was about, but he didn't ask. She was right. That was behing them. They were moving forward. Well, as forward as they could seeing as how they weren't where they were supposed to be. Getting used to it together was probably a better idea than anything else he could come up with.

He fumbled around in his pocket for the license and his identification and everything. It was a good thing that New York didn't require a blood test. That would have been a little awkward, though he imagined SHIELD might have had some insight into how to get around that. "I'll go sign in," he said.

"Okay. I'll loiter back here at the back of this little clump of people that I assume is a line." She smiled at him and rubbed his arm a bit before moving to stand in line.

They were one of the fanicer couples in attendance. There was one couple near the front that looked like teenagers who had ditched school—she sincerely hoped they were older than they look. There was a very disgruntled couple behind them who looked more interested in their phones than each other. The ones directly in front of her looked in love, but wore very poor quality clothes. But if it was the best they had, that must've been enough for them.

She smiled when she saw Clark return and wrapped her arm around his waist, leaning into her favorite little crook in against his shoulder.

"They said it would probably only be about a fifteen minute wait. I guess they get things done in and out pretty quickly here. Something about New Yorkers hating to wait in line." He smiled and stepped in alongside her, then kissed the side of her head. "And, if you're interested to know, I got a good laugh about our names. Then a sigh and some comment about the fact that we must have been fated to meet, with names like ours."

Lois weaved absently rubbed his arm and chuckled. "I love that they're so much more willing to believe that we have crazy fate and horribly mean parents than believe that we could actually be the Clark Kent and Lois Lane they think we're named after. But I guess ever since I met you I've sort of started believing whatever the hell is thrown at me." She squeezed his arm and smiled to herself. It was true. Knowing Clark had turned into a believer in so many things.

The guy at the desk had been right; they moved up the line quickly, and within just over ten minutes were at the front of the line, waiting for the final couple to be done. "Lois Lane? Lois Lane Kent? Lois Kent?"

Oh he knew that decision was coming, and he shook his head. "That's going to have to be up to you. I know how much you love your byline, and I wouldn't ask you to change it for me," he teased. He glanced down at the paperwork in his hand. "You should make a decision quickly though, as we're next to go."

It was true. She really, really loved her byline. And she knew he wouldn't ask her to be Mrs. Kent, because he understood her.

But which did she want? Did she want to stay the strong, independent reporter, the one who didn't bend for anyone? Or could she fully admit she was a member of a team? She grinned up at him. "Just because my legal name is Lois Kent doesn't mean I can't keep Lois Lane as a byline—and I will."

Clark squeezed her hand. "Are you sure?" he asked a moment later, because he didn't want her doing anything that she had any sort of hesitation about, and that certainly included her changing her name.
