What: A dancing lesson
Rating: G

Fiver was nervous, he had no idea what exactly this prom would involve. He had found the basics of it but it still confused him. It had said there would be dancing and he had no idea how to dance, River had said she would teach him though. He liked her and he was grateful for it, she was a good friend. Still he was very nervous about it. He didn’t know what to expect. He did trust River though, she treated him like a person and not someone odd. Even here he was odd, he had an odd name and people stared when they found out he used to be a Rabbit. Not as much as before. It was still there though. He didn’t like that. “River?” he called out entering the room where they said they would meet for the lessons. He hoped they would go well. River had arranged for them to meet in an empty classroom which would be plenty big enough for them to dance. She’d brought along a small music player (A boombox the person at the store had called it although it didn’t make a booming noise at all so she couldn’t imagine why they called it that) and set it up in the corner. The music she’d picked was simple, a recording of some waltzes which she liked. They might not be playing that kind of music at the prom but she didn’t care. She was going to have a good time with Fiver no matter what and they’d dance however they pleased. River was used to people staring at her strangely, it didn’t phase her in the least. “Hi Fiver!” she called from the corner where she was putting the CD in the player. “I’m almost done. Come over here.” River stood up and straightened her skirt. As usual she was wearing a lightweight skirt with one of the sweaters Captain Mal had given her for Valentine’s Day over it. She had actually not worn her combat boots for the lesson since that would only mean she’d be more likely to step on Fiver’s toes and she didn’t want to do that.. “Hi,” he replied as he crossed the room to where she was. He had no idea what the contraption was - the boombox or the CD but he was sure River knew what she was doing. She usually seemed to anyway. He was nervous about these lessons and found that he was chewing his lip slightly as he waited her to finish. He prayed that they would go well. “What are we going to do?” he asked hesitantly. He prayed that River would start out easy - she probably would but would easy for her be easy for him though? That was what he was worried about. Plus he had seen some dancing on the television and he wasn’t sure if he could move like that. It looked complicated. “We’re going to dance,” she said, looking at him as if to say ‘isn’t it obvious?’ “It won’t be complicated. I thought we could start out with something easy.” She pressed the play button and music filled the room. “Now you stand in front of me and put your hand here.” River took his hand and put it on her waist. “and the other hand goes here.” She rested her hand in the palm of his other hand and looked at him. “There. Now stand a little closer...” River stepped forward and looked up at him. “Now just do what I do.” She began to move to the music, counting out 1, 2, 3 so that Fiver could see that they were taking the movements three at a time. “Okay,” Fiver said still terrified that it would turn out to be really complicated. Despite that he did trust River but he was naturally a person - rabbit? - who naturally felt anxious over everything and their adventure to reach Watership Down hadn’t helped his anxiety. Having friends like River was good though, it offered him some stability besides Hazel here. “Okay,” he nodded letting her place his hands in the right places before he stood closer to her. It felt odd but he decided it was just because he had never done anything like this before. He tried to copy what she did but found that he couldn’t move his feet in the right direction at the right times. It looked easier than it was which annoyed him. River sighed. She knew this wouldn’t be easy but it was turning out to be more complicated than she had expected. “Fiver,” she said. “ stop watching your feet and look at him. Just follow me. Move when I move and everything will be fine. Okay? I’m not going to hurt you.” River wasn’t sure that he was thinking she might but since most people seemed to assume that she was going to, she wanted to reassure Fiver. “Okay,” Fiver said trying to look at River in the eyes and not the floor like he was wanting to do. He was sure he would stumble and trip while he was doing that but he found when she moved that he was moving too - even if he was clumsy at first. “I’ll try.” He didn’t think she would hurt him but he didn’t know how he would do not watching his steps. She moved a little bit closer to him and smiled. “You’re doing great, it’s not easy at first but you’ll get it.” They continued to dance for a few moments and then she said “I’m really glad you came here with me tonight Fiver. I like you, you don’t look at me funny like some people do. It’s nice.” River knew that people had heard things about her from the television show and the movie, she knew that a lot of the people who didn’t live in the Tower thought she was crazy but she wasn’t. At least not anymore. Well not most of the time. Fiver didn’t mind all that though and that made River happy. |
