Fiver was nervous, he had gotten his hands on a suit though he continually found himself fidgeting with it. He didn’t like man clothes as it was and this was even more uncomfortable than anything else he was used too. River looked nice though, as nice as he could tell though - he didn’t have much experience but he had heard others saying the people they were with looked nice so he supposed it was a normal thing to say. He was nervous though. In this world and his homeworld he had never been in a situation like this before. He was uncomfortable but he was glad he was with River. He knew Hazel was coming too so if it got uncomfortable he at least knew Hazel as well. That he was thankful for. River had never worn a dress so beautiful before. It was simple yet perfect for her and she had put it on every day for the past week so that she could practice walking in it as well as dancing in her high heeled shoes. She wasn’t sure about how to wear her hair but in the end, she’d pulled it back with two silver combs so that she could show off the butterfly earrings that Simon had given her for her birthday. By the time Fiver had some to the door, she was nervous and was having a hard time sitting still. When he got there though River felt much better. Part of her had been afraid that he wouldn’t come, that she might have scared him off but here he was and now they were standing near the door of the room where the prom was being held. River looked around, in awe of the decorations and of the way everyone looked. “It’s beautiful,” she said with a sigh. “it looks like fairyland. Or what I think it would look like. What do you think?” “It is beautiful,” he agreed. “Don’t know fairyland so I can’t compare though,” he told her. He wasn’t sure if it was an actual fairyland or just something that River liked. She confused him as much as this world did but he liked her. She was nice. “I’ve never been to fairyland either,” she admitted. “I’ve read stories though and I’ve always imagined it to be like this, full of lights and people dancing.” River couldn’t stop smiling. In many ways she was still a child despite some of the things she’d seen and done. The Alliance had robbed her of her childhood but she was slowly regaining herself. “What do they say?” he asked curiously. “It sounds pretty though,” he admitted. It did even if he didn’t have a solid grasp on ‘pretty’ in terms of human things. He was slowly learning though and from what he had learned that did sound pretty.”Do you know where it is?” he asked curiously. “Maybe we can go one day.” “I don’t think it’s a real place,” River replied. “but if it is, we can go there. I think it would be wonderful!” She looked around the room, a huge smile on her face. “Do you want to dance? Or should we get something to eat or drink first?” “I hope it is real,” he told her. “It would be a lot of fun.” River knew the most amazing things and it continually surprised him. He hoped she never stopped telling him things like that. “Dance? Unless you want to eat?” he suggested. While he still had trouble writing sentences with the grammar he thankfully - most of the time that is, had an easy enough time speaking the man language as not to look like a fool. “No. Let’s dance. That’s what we’re here for after all,” she said and took his hand. “Come on,” River smiled and led him onto the dance floor. “Remember what I told you. Just follow me.” “Okay,” Fiver nodded. “I think I can do that,” he told her which was true. Following her onto the dance floor, he took a deep breath and started to follow her in the steps of the dance. He was doing a good job and on impulse, River kissed his cheek. “You’re doing fine, Fiver,” she told him. “See this is fun!” and it was. She loved the music and she loved to dance. It was something she’d always loved, something the Alliance had taken away from her and it was nice to have it back. It didn’t bother her in the least that they were waltzing when a lot of other people in the room weren’t. River was happy and that was all that mattered. Fiver blushed as she kissed his cheek. That was odd. He had never done anything like that before. No one had done that to him though either. All of this was knew. “Thank you,” he told her with a smile. “It is,” he agreed. It was still odd for him but he was enjoying it, those lessons had definitely helped and he enjoyed all his time spent with River. |
