Volunteer work had always been a part of Kate's life. Her mother's own activism had been an inspiration to her, and after her mother's death, she had wanted to keep a link to her. Taking time out of her day to help the less fortunate had always been part of her routine and here, it served the double purpose of giving her a chance to catch up with Cassie at the end of a week. The insanity of this place, between the demands of school and the demands of Clint, had left Kate wanting for time in most situations so just going out had often been limited to spur of the minute decisions to throw off her other responsibilities or planning weeks ahead of the fact. So it was good that there was this time settled in for the two of them to spend together.
Rubbing her hands together, as her shift was wrapping up, Kate moved to clear off her area for the next person taking over. There was no reason to leave a mess for them to clean up after she'd gone so raking out the last few dishes that she'd gathered up, Kate took them over to the dish washing area before stripping off her gloves and tossing them in the trash as she passed it again.
"Do you want to grab something to eat before we head back?" Kate asked Cassie as she collected her purse from the volunteer's coat closet. "God knows that I didn't manage to get anything before I headed out this morning." Kate had barely managed to get much sleep after the evening's festivities. Food had been secondary to rest.
