Regarding our previous conversation, I found some information in the library, but then I happened to think that the Internet might have some information and was, in fact, able to track down some links.
This entry should give you an idea of Dewey Decimal Classes, which is used in many countries. It has some flaws, most notably that it becomes unwieldy for larger libraries, but when one is working with a single bookshelf it is unlikely that flaw will show itself.
There is also the Library of Congress Classification, which is used in larger libraries, and primarily in the United States, I believe, although there may be other countries that use it.
For your purposes I don't believe the precise details of use would matter significantly, and at any case I probably am not the best person to ask as I have not been trained in organizing material with these systems only with retrieving it, but feel free to ask questions if you have them.
Sincerely,
Wesley Wyndam-Pryce
