Kathryn hadn't felt this nervous in years. Probably not since she and Jason had told her family they were engaged. That had been different with her engagement to Mark. She was a lot older then and her family had known Mark since she was a child. Not only was she nervous though, she was scared. At first she truly had thought she had the flu and maybe she had it slightly but she didn't know for sure. It wasn't until she started to feel sick again and realised that shed missed a period and then another that her suspicions grew. She was pregnant. Or at least there was a chance that she was. She had no idea what to think of that, what Nathan would think they hadn't talked about that sort of thing they hadn't been together for that long as it was. So she decided to go to Christine. Besides Nathan she was her closest friend here and there was the fact she was a nurse too but that wasn't why. She wanted support when she went to have the test done but didn't want to let Nathan know until she was absolutely positive. Knocking on the door to Christine's apartment she couldn't stand still she was so jittery with nerves. Brushing a strand of hair out of her face she chewed her lip and prayed that shed answer the door and soon. Christine was sitting on her bed, her nose buried in a stack of index cards and an MCAT prep book. McCoy hadn't been kidding when he'd told her that he was a tough teacher but she was glad he was. If she was going to do this, she wanted to do it right and she wanted to succeed at it. There was no way she was going to go into it unprepared. Christine didn't do anything half-assed, she never had and she wasn't about to start now. When she heard the knock she looked up at glanced at the clock. She'd been studying for a lot longer than she'd realized and she was grateful for the interruption. Putting the cards and book aside, she got up from the bed and stretched before heading out to the living room to answer the door. When she saw Kathryn standing there, she smiled, happy to see her friend. "Hi," she said. "you picked a great time to stop by. I've been studying and a break is just what I need. "What's up?" Christine had come to consider Kathryn a close friend since they'd met and she had great respect for the captain. It wasn't only that though, she was an interesting person and Christine always enjoyed spending time with her. Kathryn smiled. It was easier to focus on Christine at the moment than the reason why she was here. "How's it going Doctor Chapel," she asked her friend. Yes she was purposely avoiding the question at that moment but she was sure she was looking as nervous as she felt. She was glad shed gone to Christine though, she trusted her and knew shed support her and keep quiet until she was ready to talk about it. "Doctor Chapel. It's going to be a while before anyone can call me that," she laughed. "Come on in, have a seat. Can I get you anything?" Christine was happy to have the distraction for a bit. Everything she'd been reading was starting to run together and a break was more than welcome. "I've been sitting with my nose buried in a book for most of the morning so it feels good to get out of that bedroom for a while." "Oh I don't know I'm sure you will get there soon enough," she told her friend. "I think I'll pass," she told her friend. "I'm not sure if I'll keep it down. Nerves and um stuff," she said looking down at her hands. "I can offer a distraction," she said. Looking up from her lap which she had glanced down to while saying that she finally blurted it out. "I think I'm pregnant." Christine smiled "Well if I keep hearing it, I'll start to believe it." She sat down and looked over at her friend. At first the words didn't hit her and then they did. "Wait. What?" Her eyes widened. "You think you're pregnant? Oh my god, Kathryn. What makes you think that? I guess you've skipped a period..or two. Are you sure? It could just be an after effect of the flu you had. Your body might still be stressed which will make your cycles irregular." Christine wasn't sure how to approach this since she didn't know if Kathryn thought being pregnant would be a good thing or a bad thing. "Have you taken a test? That's the first thing you need to do. Take a test, find out for sure and then see a doctor because I have no idea how accurate the tests in this time would be. If we were back home, I'd know but it's not something you want to be wrong about." She paused for a moment and looked carefully at Kathryn. "If you are pregnant. Is this something that you're happy about? Something that you and Nathan want?" Christine had met Nathan only a couple of times but he seemed like a nice person and he was quite clearly nuts about Kathryn which was good. That meant he was more likely to take the news well if it turned out to be true. "I've missed two. I should have had one right before I came down with the flu actually. It wasn't until afterwards that I realized I'd missed it and I missed the one before that too," she admitted. "I didn't even think of it at the time as it has happened before but I've never missed two in a row, no matter how stressful my life has been. If it was after maybe but it was before... I don't know but I know the signs though. Not yet... I was hoping you'd come?" she admitted. "I don't think I can do this alone." She hadn't felt this nervous in forever and to think if she was pregnant she would have to tell Nathan after this, that made her even more nervous than she already was. "I don't know I guess I never really thought about it truthfully. The timing was never right and I haven't had the best luck with relationships. I suppose I always wanted a child but never really thought it would happen. I have no idea about Nathan, he had kids back home which is something though? We haven't even talked about it." "Of course I'll go with you. You can even come back here and take the test if that will make you feel better." Christine reached out and laid a hand on top of Kathryn's. "I don't know him that well but I honestly don't think you have anything to worry about where Nathan is concerned. It's pretty clear to me that he loves you...he'll probably be thrilled." She didn't want to voice the one thing that was running through her mind which was what would happen if the Tesseract took one or the other of them back before the baby was born. Now wasn't the time for that though, she was going to support her friend. "Let me get my purse and we can go. There's a pharmacy on the corner. You should be able to find one there. Might want to get a couple just to be sure. I would if it were me." Christine would buy one of every brand if it were her she thought because she wasn't completely confident in the medical technology of the 21st century. "Thank you, that means a lot. I appreciate it. I think I need all the support right now. I don't think I've ever been this nervous," she admitted to the other woman. "I hope so, I just haven't had much luck with relationships and this isn't a normal situation no matter how much I wish it was or it sometimes seems to be. I know he loves me but... I'm still scared." Christine didn't need to voice her thoughts, Kathryn was having enough of them as it was though she was trying to focus on the here and now it was hard to with this looming over her. "A couple might be a good idea. I mean I don't know how accurate they are in this time..." she trailed off with a shrug. "I know you're nervous. I'd feel the same way if I were in your situation." Christine couldn't imagine what she would do if she found herself pregnant. Quickly she pushed the thought from her brain, no reason to go there after all, and stood up. "I'll be right back." She went into her bedroom and grabbed her purse, tossing her phone inside and then returning to the living room to join Kathryn. "Okay let's go buy some pregnancy tests." She was trying to be upbeat in order to keep her friend calm but Christine could tell that Kathryn was a wreck. She reached out and put her arms around her friend, pulling her into a hug. "Hey. it's going to be fine, okay? No matter what, it's going to be fine. Nathan loves you, there's no reason to worry. And you're going to be fine too." Christine knew that just the idea of being pregnant could be frightening to someone who'd never had a child, she herself got a little anxious thinking about it. "Thanks," Kathryn said with the best of an attempt at a smile that she could manage at that moment. She did appreciate the fact that Christine was trying to make the situation easier, to make her more relaxed. She couldn't help but be tense though. She was never good with this sort of stuff and added in her natural inclination to worry well... She was worrying a lot. "I know which I do appreciate I just know this will come as a massive shock if I am right," she said with a shrug. "Well we won't know if you're right unless we leave," Christine said and stepped back. "So let's get going." She walked over to the door and opened it, The two women made their way downstairs and out onto the street. The pharmacy was just on the corner and when they got inside, they looked over the boxes....Christine couldn't get over how many different kinds of pregnancy tests there were...and picked out a few that she thought seemed to sound the most reliable. Never having taken one (thank god) Christine was just going by what she could tell from the packages. When they'd purchased them, they'd returned to Christine's place and she handed Kathryn the bag. "Okay so there you go. Now go pee. Do it one at a time and tell me which one you're doing so I can read the directions. I won't sit in there and watch you," she laughed. "Then we'll see what happens." "Okay," Kathryn said following her out. She let Christine take the lead at the pharmacy cause truthfully she had no idea about any of this. Hell, back home they had other ways of testing for pregnancies and she hadn't even been all that knowledgeable about that though she and Jason had briefly talked about children even if they were aware at that time it would have been impossible. Once back, Kathryn did as she was instructed and after she had peed on all of them she left the bathroom, a light blush on her face. "Okay, what now?" she asked hesitantly. Christine was sitting on the floor, her back against the wall reading the package inserts. "Well...it says that this one, the pink box takes thee minutes and it gives you a plus sign for yes and a minus sign for no. The second one..." she held up another insert "which was in the white box takes five minutes and it gives you a straight yes or no and the last one in the blue box is another plus or minus one." She'd deliberately picked ones that gave concrete answers, not the ones where you had to interpret a line or a color. Christine felt much more comfortable with a "yes" or a "no." "You put them on the boxes so we'd know which was which?" She glanced up at Kathryn. "Okay so that killed one minute so in two minutes the first one will be done. Then two minutes after that the other two will be done. So we'll know in two minutes and the others are just fail safes." Kathryn stared at her feet. "This is going to be the longest two minutes or so in my life," she told her. She refused to look at Christine in the eye, it was far to awkward for her to do so. "They're on the right boxes," she confirmed. Kathryn glanced at the clock positive that two minutes had surely passed. Except it hadn't, it was only thirty seconds. Cursing slightly she banged her head against the wall in frustration. "Kathryn, it's okay," Christine said, reaching out to touch her friend's ankle. "you don't know what it's going to show yet. Maybe you're not. What do you want though? Do you want this?" She realized she hadn't asked her that and Christine was curious. She knew how she would feel, it would be a huge shock and while Christine loved kids and wouldn't mind having one some day she couldn't imagine having one here where things were so uncertain. She glanced at her watch. "Oh it's time for the first one. Do you want to get it or would it be easier for you if I looked?" "I don't know. I never really thought about it. My career always came first. I guess I did want them just never thought it would be possible," she admitted. "Both at once?" she suggested. "Okay we can do that," Christine pushed herself up on the floor and went into the bathroom. She picked up the first of the tests and looked at it before showing it to Kathryn. "Plus sign." It would be another couple of minutes for the other two so she reached out and took her friend's hand. "Okay so that's just one. Could be a false positive, we'll find out in a couple of minutes." Christine moved and took Kathryn by the shoulders and sat down on the commode. "Sit. You look like you need to. Breathe in, don't you dare pass out on me!" Kathryn sucked in a breathe when Christine got up to check on the test. She couldn't breathe, she couldn't think. What if she truly was pregnant? What would that mean for her and Nathan? For their relationship? When Christine came back and it was positive.... She had no idea what to think with that. "How often does that happen?" she finally managed to get out as she was pushed down onto a seat. "A false positive? I don't know really," Christine studied the package insert again. "It says that if you wait too long..which we didn't..or the test is expired...which isn't not. That can give a false positive. Or if you have some kind of infection which you don't do you? But that's just one the other two will give us an answer." She glanced at the clock and picked up the other two tests and nodded. "Both positive, Kathryn you're going to have a baby." Kathryn stared at her friend not believing it. She was going to have a baby. "I'm... I'm going... I'm going to faint," she said instead of what she was going to say right before she collapsed onto the ground. |
