Ukitake had intended to stop by the Timeless Tea Shop for a soothing cup of tea after a long morning filled with employment interviews. It was remarkable how difficult finding a job proved to be in a city as large as New York, and even more remarkable how stressful finding a job in a field he had mastered well over a thousand years ago was also proving to be. Kendo was, after all, where one began when learning to utilize a zanpaktou. It seemed a logical career path for an individual who needed the freedom to set his own schedule and had little else to offer the modern world outside of military logistics and bureaucracy. In fact, Ukitake's qualifications in the latter field were, in a way, woefully out of date. Soul Society still insisted on using a brush and ink when the living world had moved on to computers and electronic files. Oh, Ukitake knew how to use a computer, and the technology of Soul Society in many ways outstripped that of the world he found himself in now, but there were no Microsoft programs to found in the afterlife. In any case, Setsuna's shop offered a welcome reprieve from the difficulties one faced when uprooted from a life and career that spanned more than twenty centuries, and Ukitake intended to make the most of the free time that now filled the rest of his day. He had not at all planned for what was to come ... but then, when did he ever plan for the frequent attacks that had plagued him since childhood? If he did that, he'd never set a food out of bed, and he most certainly would not be sitting quietly in a pleasant little shop, waiting for a chance to share a friendly word or two with one of the few friends he had made in this very strange world. |
