Who: Alex Summers (First Class) & Jubilation Lee
When: March 29th!
Where: Out on the mean streets of NYC and then Potts Tower.
What: First date! And awkwardness. And cuteness.
Rating: Low! They’re all fluff.
Status: Completed!
First date since Alex had been transported from the 1960’s and it went... better than expected? It was as awkward and he was as nervous as he did expect, but that didn’t seem to impact the date much. It helped that Jubilee was her normal bundle of energy, and was more than capable of keeping the conversation rolling. The place he’d picked (with help) was nice, quiet and even romantic. There was even a lit candle on the table. Cripes. Somehow, by the grace of whatever-higher-being-there-was, Alex managed to keep the food off of his lap when Jubilee stripped off her jacket. He’d coughed, glanced, shifted, squirmed and then dealt with sweaty palms the rest of the dinner. By the time dessert was done and he’d paid the bill, Alex was sure he wasn’t getting out of this evening alive. But he was determined to see her to her door anyway, sweaty palms and all. As much as Jubilee would swear otherwise, this was her first date. Everyone went on dates, so what was the big deal? The big deal was that dates were nerve wracking torture sessions designed to make sane people crazy. She had never been this nervous in her life. Not even when being chased by murderous bad guys with a grudge. Okay, that had sucked, but at least it had adrenaline to ease the pain. Jubilee hadn’t been able to eat all day, which for her might as well have been a week. By the time she was satisfied that she no longer looked like a troll, they were on their way to dinner. It started out painfully awkward, but after one embarrassing stomach growl she was right back to normal. Mostly. The place he took her was far nicer than she could have expected and she was glad she had gone with a dress. Now they were walking back to the tower and those feelings of nerves were coming right back. Dating sucked, but at least it came with food. Shouldn’t they be holding hands? Or walking arm in arm? That’s what the CW promised. Jubilee slipped her hand in his, scrunching her nose at the moisture on his palm. “Your hand is like a sauna. It’s a good thing you’re cute,” she said, holding onto his hand a little bit tighter. For an eighteen year old guy, he was supposed to be cool and calm and completely with the program - but apparently that did not happen when that eighteen year old was a mutant and had dealt with powers the last few years that were more harm than good. The last date he’d even been on was when was a stupid sixteen year old (versus a stupid eighteen year old, important distinction there) and it was different in the 60’s. They had soda shops, and convincing his adopted dad to borrow the car, and being the cool bad boy just because he wore a leather jacket. In hindsight, it really wasn’t all that different right now as it was then. But he was still worried about expectations and differences in the decades and figuring out exactly what was supposed to happen. All of which was on his brain when she slipped her hand in his and he damn near jumped out of his skin. “Sh-” He pulled his hand away for just a brief second to wipe it on his pants and then immediately slipped his fingers back in with hers. “Sorry. I give off uh, energy? I guess. But you uh, look great-cute too.” Lame, Summers. “I know I already said that, but- You look great enough that it deserved repeating?” He pulled his hand away and Jubilee had a sudden surge of panic. Did he regret going on the date? Did he want to make the first move? He was from ancient times. Not that he had ever acted it but they had only been hanging out as friends before. And just like that his fingers were linked with her and she felt her nerves subside. Cute wasn’t the look she was going for, but he was complimenting her and she wasn’t going to argue against that. Next time she was leaving the jacket at home. Period. “Try not to act too surprised there, Summers. You’ll give a girl a complex. That said, I am always willing to be reminded of how awesome I am. I mean, I know I am, but it’s good for others to remind themselves.” As much as Jubilee missed being back home, she was really glad that she was here. If this were home, they’d probably be kidnapped by now. He’d probably be old. She knew the rumors that people forgot everything when they went back, but she was hoping that was wrong. This was a good date to remember, even if he did have sweaty palms. “How did you find that place anyways? Or have you been sneaking off to fancy dinners all along and not inviting me? You go with Bobby, don’t you? I knew that kid was trouble.” “Not surprised, I mean- I noticed, before. A lot.” God this was awkward. Where had his ability to talk disappear to? Because this? This was a giant cluster of awkward teenage ramblings. But at least in his haze of nervousness he still managed to reach ahead and open the glass door to Potts tower for her without unlinking their hands again. Even if they were easily spotted in the lobby of the tower, he really didn’t care. Even pulled her a little closer with a light tug to her hand. He completely failed to notice that they were being watched, likely because it wasn’t in a threatening manner but more of a curious glance in their direction from a surly Canadian. Walking and talking meant Alex didn’t get a full-view of the expressions that flashed across her face, and glancing down at her wasn’t satisfactory enough, so his steps suffered and he only narrowly avoided walking into a potted plant near a wall. “That thing just came out of nowhere-” Even with the near-miss he was back at glancing over at her, a little sheepish. “Uh, Jean? I never take Bobby anyplace nice, I swear. But Jean’s been helpful.” Jubilee was suddenly glad he was tall and couldn’t see her face. She wasn’t one to blush easily, but that had sent one down right to her toes. She was trying not to smile like a complete madman, but it was really hard. “We are pretty hot, aren’t we? It’s amazing more people don’t hate us for our beauty.” She knew she was talking like an idiot, but she couldn’t seem to stop from blurting things out. It was either that or vomit and she was not wasting perfectly good food. Jubilee wasn’t one who usually waited for someone to open the doors for her, she was more of a push the handicap button type, but she could get used to this. It was cheesy and girly and stupid, but she loved it all the same. “This is why I don’t trust nature. Want me to stomp on it for you? It will teach it to never mess with the X-Men again.” Jubilee wasn’t completely unaware of holding hands with him in public. It was all she could do not to raise their linked hands in the air and brag. But that wasn’t classy and you were supposed to be classy on dates. It was adult and shit. “Jean is always helpful. People tend to go on about Mother Theresa but that’s only because they never met Jean. She’s basically my hero.” Alex laughed and there was no way he was going to disagree with that statement. Cause, well, look at her and he already knew he wasn’t bad looking. And her blurting out ridiculous statement was endearing to him from the very start. It almost always managed to set him at ease and get a laugh out of him, even if that wasn’t what she was going for. “Hot people beating up a plant? I think we’re above that.” And they were almost at the elevator, anyway. Almost out of prying eyes and people that could be lurking around for something to tease them about. “Hey, you know, I’m not going to argue but I figured it was worth noting that was a reference I actually got.” Everybody knew Mother Teresa, right? Even in the 60’s. But given he only got about ten percent of what Jubilee said on any given day, he jumped on it happily. Alex reached forward to hit the up arrow on the elevator at least a half-dozen times, nervously. “So uh- did you want to come back to my place and play pinball or just.. drop you off at your door?” He was so ridiculously bad at this it wasn’t even amusing anymore. “You make a valid point. Hear that, plant? You’re safe to be a dick for another day, but I’m watching you.” Jubilee shook her head at the level of pride he seemed to have about knowing one of her references. She was actually kind of impressed about how quickly he was picking things up. Half the time she forgot he had no idea what she was talking about. The other half she was trying to confuse him on purpose. He was cute when he was looking at her all confused. “She was probably a babe back then too. Spoiler alert: she gets very very old.” Hell, he’d probably be in his sixties right now if the timelines weren’t all jacked up. Grody. “Um, a little eager to get away from me? I’m all about pushing elevator buttons, but know your limits.” She still had a smile on her face, so at least he should have some indication that she was joking. “Alex, like I am ever going to turn down a game of pinball. Just don’t go crying when I break your high score.” Was pinball still a date? Or was that back to hanging out as friends? If it was a date, did that mean she should keep the smack talk to a minimum? Maybe she should text the team for advice... “Least this time it’ll be a fair fight, since the plant is about the same height as you...” Crap, was he allowed to tease her? Like this? Oh well. a little late now. Maybe she’d find it cute. Or he’d end up getting ditched in the middle of a date - either way, it was up in the air. “I kinda never went looking for pictures to find out if she was? Seems wrong. Weird. Dirty?” Given exactly what he did when he learned how to search on the internet, dirty seemed appropriate here. But inappropriate for a date, so Alex clamped his mouth shut and quietly hit the button for his floor, taking it easy. This time. “Sorry- Wasn’t. No,” Huffing out a breath, Alex slowed down his words. “I was kind of looking forward to having some alone time with you?” Oh boy, he almost immediately regretted those words as soon as they were out of his mouth. “I mean-” Jubilee slammed against his side at his comment, never letting go of his hand. “Watch yourself, Summers. In case you haven’t noticed, I am a force to be reckoned with. I take down fully grown men like it’s my job.” Jubilee rolled her eyes as he defended himself from perving on a nun. She didn’t actually think he had been lusting after her, but it was amusing to see him get so defensive about it. “Good. Me too. If your roommate is there we are kicking him out. I like Johnny and all, but I don’t need comments from the peanut gallery.” Not like they were going to be doing anything to comment about. Ohshitohshitohshitohshit. They were going to be alone in his room after a date. Not that she thought he’d do anything she’d be uncomfortable with, but she hoped he’d do something. Jubilee was a teenage girl and the idea of making out with a hot guy was not a terrible thing to think about. What if he thought she was terrible? What if she tasted like garlic? She KNEW she should have had a second mint on the way out. Thank god she wasn’t talking, because none of it would be English. “I already noticed,” Alex held his hands up in mock-surrender, giving into her immediately with a laugh. It was hard not to pay attention to the fact that they were in the elevator alone, and she was in that dress, and he was standing there like he was about to jump out of his own skin. She looked great, she smelled great, she gave him back just as much bullshit as he gave her and next thing Alex knew, he was turned toward her and gently nudging her up against the elevator wall, the hand that had been previously entwined with hers was now sliding up against her jaw to cradle her face. “Yeah? Just can’t wait to get me alone, huh, Sparkles?” He didn’t move in right away, instead just took a second to brush a piece of her hair back before he leaned down. Whatever quick comments she might have been able to make were gone as soon as she felt her back hit the cool wall of the elevator. It was no secret that he was a giant compared to her and suddenly the whole world seemed to be nothing but him. There wasn’t a part of her that minded. Jubilee wished she was one of those girls who could look sexy and in control for this moment. Instead, her eyes were open wide and she temporarily forgot how to breathe. The only thing she could focus on was how close he suddenly was and how much closer she wished he would be. His palm was warm against her cheek and she felt herself sucking in a deep breath. She couldn’t even think enough to berate him for that ridiculous nickname. She was Jubilation Lee and she would not be brought down by butterflies. Her hand reached out towards him, a single finger curling through one of his belt loops and pulling him closer. “I’ve had worse offers.” The strangled noise Alex made in the back of his throat was definitely not human. There was no way. The grumbled gurgled groan was caught there mid-sound and he sure as hell didn’t pull away from her. The opposite happened, and Alex’s tall form hovered over her with just a breath separating them. His lips touched down on hers softly, for a tentative kiss, even if he was sure at this point she was okay with something a little less tentative, there was still that nagging old fashioned part of him. But even before he could give into the urge and deepen the kiss, the elevator door slid open with a ding and Alex found himself lifting his head, an annoyed groan emerging. “Shit.” Jubilee was slightly alarmed at the sound Alex was making, until she realized that it was a good thing. She felt herself suck in a breath as he lowered his face towards her, raising on tiptoes to get in closer. His lips were softer than she had thought they would be. Soft, warm and barely there. A wayward thought entered her head that she should be providing pafs for this moment, but she let the thought float away. When the elevator dinged and he pulled away she could have screamed. She wasn’t ready for the kiss to be over and it took her a moment to realize pouting wasn’t the appropriate response. “Don’t worry, we can do it again. If you want. I mean, that was great. Nice. We should probably get off the elevator now. Yeah, pinball time, right? Right.” She knew she was babbling, but she could swear she still felt the light pressure from his kiss on her lips. Jubilee had gone and fallen for a Summers. She was in so much trouble. Alex stepped away just enough to give them both a little room and to rake his hands through his short blonde hair. What started out as an awkward chuckle quickly turned into a full on laugh at her babbling, because she was saying pretty much everything he was thinking. He reached down and snagged her hand to lead her outside the elevator and down the hall to his apartment. “Yeah, I’m pretty sure you just said everything I was thinking so uh. Want to just- go do it again?” So maybe pinball wasn’t exactly what was on his brain anymore. “Quick tip, buddy boy, don’t laugh at someone if you want to keep kissing them.” Any indignation she might have felt at his outburst vanished at the feel of his palm in hers. “Yeah, okay, that works,” she said, trying to be calm and cool. She was pretty sure it was even working, until she nearly assaulted him upon entering the room. |
