Being a werewolf isn't an either-or thing. It's not the Jekyll-and-Hyde dichotomy. It's more like a scale, with wolf at one end and human on the other. Some days were a little more wolf than others. Some people were a little more wolf than others. Every month on the day of the full moon, as the sun began to set, Kitty edged closer to wolf as the moon began to rise in the sky. It was full darkness by the time she started walking away from the town, towards the mountains, breathing in the air, heavy with heat. She'd chosen this side of the hills because it was on the opposite side of the military base, and considering she hadn't gotten hold of a car yet so she could drive away from the area, she'd have to make do with this. Wolf was restless in her skin, claws itching to get out. There was too much that was different here - and, most importantly, their mate wasn't there. Ben. Kitty soothed Wolf as well as she could, while fighting her own pang of sadness. When she had finally walked about three miles away from the town, Kitty finally sought out a small den she could burrow in later. That done, she stripped her clothes off and folded them carefully on top of a log, then stepped away to let herself go, allowing Wolf to come to the surface. The familiar pain seized her and she doubled over even as her eyesight began to change, her hands hitting the ground and becoming claws. A veil dropped over her eyes and everything went black as her human consciousness slipped away - And a tawny wolf, much larger than the size of an average wolf, stretched and shook itself in her place. Run, hunt, find mate - her thoughts were basic, instinctual, and a faint whine was heard as she took in a deep breath of air through her muzzle of the unfamiliar woods around her. The other part of her, the human part, soothed her somewhat, reminding her that their mate wasn't there - but this, for now, was their territory. And now it was time to explore and to hunt. After another breath was taken in, she let it out, then lifted her muzzle and let out a loud, long howl. Finally, she broke into an easy trot, which very quickly became a ground-eating lope. It was in this moment that both sides of her felt free. Happy. Running, exploring, learning this place - this felt right, a fact which disturbed the human side peripherally, but the Wolf overrode that emotion. This was what they were meant for. She ran for what seemed like hours, for miles, and when her nose caught the scent of a rabbit - Prey - the hunter went for it without thought. The creature gave little chase before it was killed and eaten, and the wolf moved on. When eventually she began to grow tired, the wolf began to trot back to the place she had chosen for tonight's den. When she reached it, the wolf climbed in and settled in, feeling suddenly lonely without its mate. Resting her muzzle on her front paws, her tail circling to cover her nose, she sighed and drifted off to sleep. As dawn hit, Kitty awoke slowly in her human form, stretching to get rid of kinks, then opened her eyes. She made a face at the taste of stale blood in her mouth as she sat up, then stood and rolled her neck. For a long moment, she stared around at the woods surrounding her, before finally giving a long sigh and got dressed again to begin her walk back towards Tumbleweed. |
