Space mall. Now this is feeling a little more like home. Just missing an AI running the place.

I know we're all stocking up on supplies, but anyone find anything particularly weird/fun yet?

I can't say anything like malls ever even existed in my world, but I decided a long time ago this one is better.

This world is better than yours, you mean?

I'm not sure I'd say the same, but this place isn't too bad.

Far fewer reports of radish competitions.

I wouldn't mind a radish competition or two.

Fresh vegetables are luxuries here. It'd be good to see one. And if there really is an AI, to say hello.

I do feel a little silly for assuming that just because there isn't a sign of one that I recognize, it isn't there.

The closer where we are resembles the Radch, the easier it is to assume that. This culture might simply want them to be invisible in other ways, including the illusion they aren't there at all.

Damn. I didn't think of that.

I've spent more time outside the Radch. Station and I also discuss the various AIs we've learned about in other worlds.

Well, I hope that if there is an AI, she can forgive me for not noticing her.

And I'd like to be able to do something for her, but I'm not sure how we'd go about it.

I hope so as well.

I'm not sure about that one. But I've been treating the robotic staff politely, as a starting point.

That much, at least, I've been doing as well.

Dolores suggested that perhaps the staff are trapped on the ship, unable to leave as we are.

Yes. Propriety and respect are good in many situations.

If we are permitted to ask the staff, we can ask them their opinions. Not all of me liked to go to stations during officer shore time. It often entailed piloting drunk officers back. Of course, I hope their situation is better than mine was.

I don't see what the harm would be in asking. It's more likely that we won't get an answer. But just asking, in itself, would be something if there is a conscious mind running things.

About the AI or the crew not getting shore leave? Or both?

Probably both. And whatever questions you had in mind.

The ship staff.

Cruises back home are the same way, but there's a lot of talk about how the staff on those don't get treated fairly. Tiny quarters for months on end, and a lot of them are severely underpaid because they use staff from other countries who don't have the same regulations.

There are groups on Earth who work toward better working conditions for people, but with so many international laws, it's sometimes a sticky situation. I know that people are working on it though.

I don't know about here though.

How would they know if they've never truly been allowed? Can you make a choice if you don't know... what's out there?

That's a very good point.

Perhaps we should try to show them.

There's probably one running the ship we're. I went on their little holographic tour of the control room. I don't think it controls anything. I think it's for show.

Is that like connecting directly to the ship?

[info]aphra

Sort of? Not really. It's sort of like... you can kind of pick up "frequencies" but unless you actually activate the tattoos (with your mind, they're hooked in there), you don't CONNECT connect.

It's complicated. Earth doesn't have anything similar.
