Excuse me, I-

Oh, I dropped it. Hello? Is this thing broken?

My name is Dolores. I'm not sure I understand where I am. The kind folks at the... bureau tried to explain it, but I'm afraid so little made sense to me and so many words I've never heard before. My head isn't feeling quite right. Texas is a bit far from home, yet I've found my ranch and my horse as if somehow all the land has shifted overnight. My parents are missing, and our herd seems to also be lost. I'm afraid they won't know the way back.

Is this real? Where is Sweetwater? I was meant to go into town this morning. Has the train come by yet? Maybe there's still time to get back before dark.

Hello, Seivarden. That is an unusual name, I have never heard anything like it before. Are you from elsewhere too?

I do not understand. There is only one world. I just happened to end up in the wrong place in it.

It's a name from another time and place. Another world and another planet.

I'm afraid that's not true. There are many worlds. Most people live in only one their whole lives, and it's the only one they know. Perhaps we're not meant to see more than one. But the group of us that's been brought here, we'll be in at least two.

How far is Sweetwater from Texas, do you know? Perhaps it would help to go there and see the difference. Although that may be quite a lot to take in, too.

... Are you quite all right, sir? You must have hit your head. I can ask for the doctor.

I don’t know how far. I don’t know. I’ve never left it. I wasn’t supposed to leave.

I'm perfectly alright. Sorry. Didn't mean to overwhelm you.

Is Sweetwater a city? Do you know what country or state?

I admit everything has been such a shock to take in. And apparently children are being kidnapped too? Has somebody gone to the sheriff?

It’s a town, a settlement in the desert of the western United States. Where the mountains stretch on for days. It’s very lovely.

Not sure about the sheriff, but the bureau is definitely looking into that.

It looks like there's a Sweetwater here in Texas, a township Sweetwater in Nevada, and a Sweetwater River in California. Do you know the name of the mountain range? Or any other landmarks? That might help narrow it down.

I do hope they find those missing children. Have they been taken for ransom?

I... it is near Escalante, the town buried by sand, and Las Mudas.

Honestly, I'm not certain.

Escalante looks like it's in what we call Utah. Haven't found Las Mudas on a map except in a television show but Escalante might be a good place to start, if you want to go looking for home.

Could I take a look at this map? I should prepare my horse to ride out the next morning. My father will be looking for me.

Here you go*. It's a mighty far way to go by horse.

Yeah. You're a long way from home, I'm afraid.

There are trains, still, if that's another mode of transportation you're more comfortable with than, say, cars or planes. Might be faster, or at least easier.

...

This really must be a bad dream. It was only 1873 this morning. Time cannot go by so quickly.

No, time still works the same. It didn't so much 'go by' as you skipped right over it.

Never considered the possibility of time travel before?

Sometimes I have felt stuck in the same time, as if the days won’t go by at all. But I never... that can’t be. Time goes by one day at a time as it always has.

I imagine we've all felt that way at least once. Long shifts on watch in the military drag on forever.

Time still moves the same way. You've just been plucked from one time and dropped into another. Skipped ahead a bit.

Were you a Union soldier?

That doesn’t make any sense. I don’t feel any older. I’d suspect I’d be long dead if nearly 150 years has gone by.
