WHO: The Mandalorian, Cara Dune (cameos by Nebula and Liv Moore)
WHEN: Today
WHERE: The Bureau
WHAT: Wakey wakey eggs and bac-y. (AKA Mando gets knocked out cold and wakes up later.)
TRIGGERS: None

______________

Tick. The edges of the noise were almost filed down the way it sounded, smoothed over where they should have been sharper.

Tick. He pulled in a breath, cautiously. Even in the slow dawning of his consciousness the Mandalorian knew better than to draw in too deeply. One misplaced (or broken) rib was all it took to let out an involuntary hiss, and then you’d end up alerting your capturer that you were coming round before you were rightly braced to contend with them.

Tick He inhaled a bit more, tentatively feeling out the limits of a sore chest before deciding that everything was about as right internally as it ever was. Next was to quietly, slowly tilt his head to glimpse where he was. A brief burst of recollection flooded back as he took in what appeared to be the inside of a containment cell. A bright flash of light, then solid ground beneath his feet, turning to see Cara beside him -- then, someone coming at them. He didn’t stop to ask any questions, and neither had Cara. The fight had seemed to be in their favor until it wasn’t. The telltale prickle of nerves was still present where the woman had applied some sort of electric current after he’d politely declined to stand down. He didn’t have a second chance to rethink that strategy.

Tick. No restraints. Either that was because he had been deemed a lesser threat, or because the room was inescapable.

Tick. Or maybe it was because that ticking noise was more indicative of something mechanical and rigged to explode. There was a little less stealth in the next movement as the Mandalorian rustled to his feet towards the offending device. He spared only a half second of consideration over the fact that no one had removed his armor or helmet as he scanned the spherical wall hanging. No. Nothing dangerous. It looked like an older type of chronometer, actually.

Tick. Sure. Chronometer. That made some sense, and much more sense than the rest of this moment. The rhythmic sound was easier to block out now. He turned to the room itself, absorbing more about it now that immediate perils seemed absent.

Except that the mere pivot to take in the environmental forced one obvious fact to the front of the Mandalorian’s attention. After fighting to ensure that the kid had been safe, after nearly giving in to the possibility that he wouldn’t walk away from Moff Gideon’s ambush…

The kid was nowhere to be seen. No small coo, no small amount of chaos unfolding to indicate that he’d found something to play with that most likely was not a toy. There were many times when the helmet felt like a wall of safety between himself and the galaxy, starting with the first day he had donned his beskar armor. No one could see his grimaces and distress as he struggled to deal with the weight and the confinement, trying to figure out how to navigate with this second skin. Now, the helmet was shielding something equally raw.

He didn’t have a moment to reflect much more before a voice called out from behind him. “Are you ready to listen now?”

Barring a few odd phrases here and there, the logic of the explanation was sound. And courteous. Anyone Imp-aligned would not go through any amount of pleasantries, not after everything with Moff Gideon on Nevarro. Sending out a medic who seemed unarmed? No, that wouldn't be anything of Imperial make. And not of any Guild make either, if somehow the tables had turned again and he was a wanted man.

The frustrating part was that as impossible to believe as it all was, the Mandalorian's gut was telling him that there was no case here for ill intent. He looked to Cara, noting her defiance and that glint of derision as she seemed to be trying to jump the same mental hurdles he was. They could hold out, but time would be lost in figuring out where the kid was.

"You inject me. Only me first." He took a few steps to the table, but stopped to address Liv more directly. "Armor stays on. That's my condition."

"Not a chance you're doing this by yourself," Cara piped up in that low voice that clearly meant she was serious, and she wasn't going to take anyone's rebuttal, no matter who they were. She hopped up on a table before he could stop her.

The only thing that had been removed from the pair was their weapons. Liv assumed the helmet might have been something that kept him breathing so she didn't take it off. Barring a medical emergency, Liv didn't remove anything from the newly Displaced.

She opened the first needle out of the package and put it together. Her gloved hands worked quickly and efficiently as she moved to "All I need is part of an arm to give you the shot. You can keep whatever you want on otherwise." She glanced between the pair of them, holding out her hand to the Mandalorian. "After this is done, I can get you some food and something to drink. I'm not sure when the last time either of you ate."

And that was how that went with Cara. So much for an attempt to make sure it was actually as safe as the doctor insisted before submitting Cara to the same. Yes, it might've been a protective play, but he knew she had a good chance of turning this scenario around if he was out of commission. The Mandalorian didn't contest her will; he knew better than to, and he respected her more than to even entertain the thought.

A glove was pulled off first. The bracers with his flamethrowers had already been removed, which meant all he needed was to roll up a sleeve enough to expose a scarred upper arm.

"Nothing for me," the Mandalorian replied to the offered meal as he awaited the pinch of the needle. Food and drink could wait. He was used to securing solitude before even considering thirst or hunger.

The scars were only just healed over. They were also — was that some sort of welding to shut them? She knew they did things differently there, but she could have done so much better sewing work on this. Liv cleaned the area, waited thirty seconds, then gave him the shot as painlessly as she could, slipping the needle in, injecting the vaccine, and then out. When that was done, she applied another cotton swab and a bandage over it. "If you have special dietary needs, I can make sure they're handled. Some people eat kosher here. Some Halal. Some are gluten free or dairy free. If there's something you're unsure of, let me know."

"I'll take whatever's popular round here," Cara said with a grin. She was adventurous, and maybe this was what they'd need to fit in. Liv reached for Cara's arm and repeated the same process on her. Liv jotted down a few things in her tablet before she smiled at Cara and said.

"I'll grab a pizza. I'd get you a beer, but no alcohol until we're sure you won't have any adverse reactions. In the meantime, there's some chairs over there to get comfortable in." She set an alarm that alert all of them when the time was up. "If you need anything, I'll be in my office right over there."

The Doctor had retreated with that final offer, which left the Mandalorian with Cara. He'd rolled his sleeve down and cast a silent vigil on the exit door. There was a loose curiosity about what a 'pizza' was, but he left it be. On the list of his concerns right now, a 'pizza' was low towards the bottom.

He didn't have to say anything, but the quiet felt all the more unnerving without a small coo to interrupt it. "No one is that friendly," was the remark. "Couldn't get a read on motives for it."

He crossed his arms. "Wherever we are, I don't think the kid came along."

Cara frowned as soon as the doctor was gone. Having a trained medic in the field was helpful when a droid couldn't be there, but it seemed strange in a set place. None of the stuff on the shelves looked at all familiar, and some of this seemed weirdly archaic.

"You sure? Could be friendly 'cause they've got him somewhere. Didn't you say you busted him out of a medlab on Nevarro?"

"It was attached to where we met the client," the Mandalorian replied. So far, his arm didn't feel any different for the injection, although he kept a piece of his attention focused on that for any change. "Crawling with Imps. This place... don't think this is Imperial."

He spared a glance to his side. Left on the shelf beside where the doctor had gathered he supplies were small stuffed animals of some variety and a few toys. those obviously weren't intend for himself or Cara. Children must have been in this room for one reason or another, and they were placated with something to fidget. That hadn't been the case for the kid. Comforts weren't a consideration.

"Thermal scanners aren't giving me anything, either."

It might have sounded strange but there was a scent to storm trooper armor. Regulation supplies had a certain chemical smell. Certain signs that signaled something Imperial. None of those signs were here. They also didn't use a lot of trickery when it came to tactics when they had the upper hand, which they clearly did here. Whoever these beings were.

"Okay. Not Imperial. That still leaves us with a galaxy full of potentials." Cara didn't like the variables. "Nothing? Just the people we met?"
