Finally, those accursed thorn scrapes and punctures have finished healing. It never takes me so long to heal from something so minor, but it seems the fairy magic behind them also caused them to heal at a slower pace than that to which I am accustomed.

Now that I am free of those marks, I will be resuming assignations at Carpe Noctem. Due to the legal status in this place, I suspect I shouldn't even advertise that, so please contact me privately and not publicly with any interest.

[FILTERED TO GOLDEN SQUARE]

If anyone should need assistance running errands while they remain cursed or in recovery from their curse, please know that I'd be happy to assist you.

Lucy, you discussed present-day apparel the other day. I have found a couturier, Miss Jan Van Dyne, who does exceptional work. She is also understanding when someone is accustomed to very different fabrics, shapes, and supports than what is commonly found here. I also noticed that you mentioned music. Will you tell me more about which instruments you play? Perhaps we have some in common.

I see how you have cleverly waited until the day I am finally whole to make such an offer. I do have a favor to ask. Come celebrate with me. I need several drinks.

Ahh, you've caught me out. Obviously I was waiting until you could do it yourself so you wouldn't ask, and yet you have. I'll grant your favor.

Oh. I didn't know people made clothes here.

I play only the piano. We didn't have much access to anything else. But it's okay. I like it well enough.

It seems it is oddly rare to do so, and yet people own many more clothes.

The piano didn't exist in my day, so you have that one over me. From what I've looked up here, we had a precursor, the "pipe organ"; I have only heard it once before. I play a few kinds of strings.

They do seem to, yes. There are entire stores full of them with many floors.

I can show you if you like.

Aren't they strange? And then their clothes very rarely fit them since the clothes aren't made for their own bodies.

I would like that. It's been years since I heard the pipe organ, and the piano will be new to me.

The sizes make little sense. No one takes measurements or anything. The undergarments are quite different.

Then I will show you. I have never played an organ before.

The upper undergarments feel so unsupportive to me. Maybe we're just so used to a certain snugness about the torso, but it feels so strange. I don't like the leg holes of these "panties" either.

Thank you, Lucy. I play lyre, kithara, and harp myself, so if we ever procure those, I'd happily demonstrate.

I think so, yes. I don't feel like they are doing what they're meant to do at all. They are very unusual and then there are the ones that apparently are designed to go between your ass cheeks? Thongs or something.

I am not even sure what a kithara is.

I think I'd feel more naked wearing such a supposed garment than if I wore nothing at all. I'm sure one of my oldest friends would wear one to make people laugh while playing his pipe.

It's a Hellene instrument with strings and a soundbox, a bit like a lyre or fiddle. Mayhap it went out of fashion.

It might be easier and less uncomfortable to wear nothing at all. He sounds like an unusual person, but probably not as much as anyone else.

Oh. I'm not sure. Maybe the richer classes know of it.

To most of the people here, I think we may all be. A boy from school invited me to come by for a party thrown that involves plastic bricks or that I could show people betting games, but instead we should bet with sweets.

Okay. I'll wait to hear about it.

I think you're right. "Plastic" is strange, too. Why would you play for sweets and not coin? Have they no money to spend?

The house hasn't had a game night in some time. I know your sister likes to share the games of your time. I'm not an expert, but I could share some of mine as well. What do you think? Or are you less fond of betting than she is? (It's the games and the socializing I enjoy more than the money.)

I'm not certain, but I did not wish to question it in case it is a sensitive topic. I only would have suggested very low bets.

I haven't done much betting, but I don't have much of my own coin here now. I believe I must get a "part-time" job. Apparently the grocers is hiring and various other businesses.

It's hard to know what they'll be sensitive about here. They're open about some things and coddle people in others.

I don't have much yet, either. I've grown spoiled, I'm afraid, and now find I keep spending what I earn as soon as I get it. I hope school and "part-time" will work out for you.

Yes, but only because I am often out of the country. It's not a matter of comfort, I've just always kept to myself and rarely stayed in one place for long.

I can return at any time, of course, if there is need of me.

As per my agreement with Miss Wells, the house and it’s inhabitants are under my protection. Were there any danger I would return immediately.

I would have offered my services in attempting to heal you if I’d realized you were injured. However, the faeries were capable of dampening my magic at the ball, so I have my doubts as to whether it would have worked.

I heal quickly and cleanly; it is only this time that it was slow compared to what I've been used to all my life. I appreciate the thought, though.

Messire Vosijk, you're going to have to actually explain things if you want me to understand you. This isn't my world, and you aren't from mine. I can follow inferences and suggestions in my own culture, but I don't know yours. Part of speaking more to others is not requiring that they ask constant follow-up questions.

I had no way of knowing what you do and don't know, nor how far your interest reaches.

I am Antari, which is an exceptionally rare and powerful form of magician; there were only three of us alive at the time that I came from. We are the only ones who command blood spells, the most common of which are for traveling between worlds, or places within a world, but there are many more, including for healing and... the opposite. Elemental magic is the command over the elements: earth, air, water, fire, and bone. Most elemental magicians of my world can command one or two elements; for Antari, all the elements are at our command.

I provided Miss Wells with a demonstration of my elemental abilities when I arrived. I could demonstrate for you as well if you wish.

Thank you for answering more clearly. I don't know about other people's worlds and lives. I don't use this "internet" to delve into what ought to be private. Without being told by you or someone else, I wouldn't know anything of your abilities.

That sounds like it could be a considerable burden. Are you born with this in some way? Or is it acquired?

What would be a burden?

It is said that the magic chooses its own way. I was born to it, though the magic did not manifest itself until I was eight years old. Antari status cannot be acquired in the way that you mean, though that doesn't stop anyone from trying.

Having power over so many things. My oldest friend took on a curse of power that another wished to shed, and blackmailed us into accepting if we wished to ever leave alive. But his command is of the air and waters, and only in a limited region. What you describe sounds like much more. I know it's a burden for him. It wasn't something he was born to like the gift of his bloodline, to see somewhat of the future.

I'm not sure about a demonstration, but thank you for offering.

Not quite. I didn't word that clearly. What they made me wear at the ball had thorns that did it to me. Afterward, the healing took much longer than what I'm used to. I've healed from much worse more quickly than that.

How are you and your lover?

Oh, I see. I did see there was a nature theme to many of the outfits, but I wasn't aware any of them actually had thorns. Regardless, I'm still very glad you've recovered.

We're alright. I spent three days after the ball in a dreamless sleep, apparently for my help in ensuring Kell's return to us. And I missed the arrival of Alucard's sister, which was unfortunate, but she is still here, which is wonderful. We've been quite busy with that and continuing the plans for our wedding.

I think it was some version of a briar rose, like the marque on my back. I guess it amused them. I'm not entirely sure who was and wasn't there.

That's very good. Is it going to be a wedding like back home or something like whatever they do here?

They did seem quite keen on personalizing everything to the person affected, though whether it was for amusement or something else, I couldn’t say.

It will be a mixture, I think. It must be legal here, which has some requirements. And it will not have any element of a coronation, as it would at home.

How have you been, other than your injuries from the ball? This place is treating you well, I hope.

I don't know enough people here well enough to discern how personally tailored everything was to most, but I did notice the Wells sisters were dressed according to their accustomed fashion. And I am well enough, though of course I long for home.

What does it take to be considered married here? You make it sound like there's such thing as an illegal marriage, or at least an unofficial one.

[info]goldenhelm

I understand the longing for home. This place is lovely, but Arnes still holds my heart.

Well, until a few years ago, marrying another man would indeed have been illegal, but it is legal now. As for making it official, primarily, there is a requirement for an officiant who has been given the power to seal the marriage, and a license that must be issued and signed by both of us and a witness.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]agiftoftongues
2018-09-28 11:57 pm UTC (link)
That seems very strange to me, as much here does. Marriage for my home, yours, and here may mean very different things. Is it a religious matter, this officiant, or strictly one of law?

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]goldenhelm
2018-09-29 12:06 am UTC (link)
As far as I can tell it is primarily legal, although religion is inextricably tied in; I am told most marriages take place in churches with a priest, or the equivalent religious leader for other religions. But it doesn't seem to be a requirement that the officiant is also some kind of religious leader.

The matter of men (or women) marrying each other, however, does seem to go against some religious beliefs. I can't say that such religions particularly interest me as a form of study, so I have not looked further into the reason why.

We're considered a bit decadent, or blasphemous, or licentious, whatever word some other nation might wish to use because of our Blessed Elua's precept: love as thou wilt. The gender of our partners isn't rigidly fixed on the opposite. Some do prefer only their own, or only the other, but most of us love all at least once.

Really, the other attitude seems stupid to me.

Yes, you did tell me that such things were normal in your world. My country is [...] somewhere in between yours and this one. Many people, including myself, freely love whoever they wish, of any gender. But there are some who have prejudices against such things, and even if they have no legal power to prevent it, they can still cause a great deal of harm. [...] It is my hope that Alucard and I can work to improve on that, starting by breaking with the traditions of gender and bloodlines ourselves.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, of course.

I did, didn't I. Do you find like I do that it's hard to remember which conversations you've had on this thing? Without voices and faces, talks I have on this seem to blur together.

Of course. If your wedding is anything like that last party of yours, I'm sure it will be quite the fête.

Oh, yes, I do. But your story stood out to me, so I remembered it. [...] I would, of course, be happy to speak to you in person, anytime we're both free.

I do love throwing parties. That one was rather small and tame for me, truthfully, but my resources are slightly less here, though they are also for a smaller audience. That is, perhaps, not a bad thing; my parties at home might have been a little excessive, but I think the people of my city enjoyed them. Nevertheless, I assure you, my wedding here will be quite something.
