Hello, people of tumble weed, or at least the displaced people of tumble weed.

First order of things. Is there anyone out there handing out loans? Not handing them out like candy, of course, because you need to trust that you'll be getting that money back, of course. And trust me, I have a job and I can pay it back in full eventually.

Second order of things. Who knows the ins and outs of getting and owning a service dog? Particularly how I get started on that?

And not grace the network with my presence?

Thanks though. I thought it would help to see if any of us had personal anecdotes for advice too.

But that takes such needless effort.

How long have you been around? Do you know anyone who does have one?

I knew of someone but she left through the portal this summer. I'm not sure of anyone else.

At least a year. I don't know.. I've been one of those people who popped in and disappeared again and then popped back in. My current situation is still pretty new though.

They might not give you one right away if its because of an injury. You have to wait like a year or something to adjust to your new parameters.

Really? It's been 9 months since I've become blind.

What would the loan be for?

For the service dog but it might take me some time to qualify for it, apparently.

I did some research, and read some of the rest of this post, and I'm not sure you will actually need a loan. Guide Dogs, Leader Dogs, and Fidelco all apparently provide their services, training, and dog for free. The only one I've found that charges money is The Seeing Eye, which asks for $150 for your first guide dog. All of them appear to be funded by donations.

Although this is my first time researching service dogs of any variety, and I'm not familiar with exactly what your needs are - I saw in the comment below that it was for a visual impairment. So perhaps I'm wrong.

Actually, that link up above doesn't apply to you. They specifically don't train guide dogs for the blind.

There's no actual governing body that regulates service animals in the United States outside of some honestly pretty sparse legalese in the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you dig around, you'll find that different organizations may have different rules and qualifications they use to determine appropriate placement of the dogs.

But the waiting lists can get pretty long, so you may not be matched with a dog for a long time even after you apply, if they approve the application.

I wasn't sure if I wasn't hearing correctly or if my tablet wasn't reading me all the options on that website.

[...] I need help with this.

You might want to start with Guide Dogs of America. They're probably the best known organization in this country for providing that kind of service animal.

The requirements are pretty extensive, though. You're looking at medical evaluations, an interview, providing details on your home life and capability to train, exercise, and care for a dog, financial situation, and you've already got to be able to navigate independently.
