I got a job! I'm working at the Bread Pitt. People are talking to me about the name, but I don't really get it. Why would you have a pit of bread? And why is it not spelled right? I guess it doesn't matter, I still have a job. It's not the Slayer's Cake, but it'll do.

Thanks for everyone who helped me. And everyone who have hung out with me. I'm still trying to get used to this place, you know?

Is there a place to plant a garden? I just have an apartment, so I don't think I there's room for one there.

You could speak to Justice of Toren. She has a rather large garden space in the station that came through with her.

At the moment we're not planting a garden so much as maintaining one, but we are certainly looking for horticulturists to help with it. But we're not currently introducing Earth variety plants into our Botanical Garden. At some point possibly make other space for such things.

I could help maintain it, perhaps. I'm a druid and I'm not from Earth, so I wouldn't even really know what to look for. Though it does seem like we have some similar plants, come to think of it. Anything I can do to help.

We would love to have you if you want to work in our Garden. We don't yet have sufficient funds to pay you, but we hopefully will soon. Ideally, we would like to be able to open the Garden to the public and charge admission in order to pay for its maintenance. We do have food and tea and potentially other options that we can offer in exchange for your work in the meantime.

Oh you don't have to worry about paying me. I'm glad to just volunteer. That sounds nice. Plants like it when you come to visit them. At least most of them do. That's perfect.

It will be a paid position at some point soon. But we would happily accept your volunteering until then.

Are you familiar with space stations, or AIs?

I'm happy to keep volunteering then.

Not at all, but I'm willing to learn! Oh wait. Is an AI like a robot? Because I know about those. Sort of.

Some robots are AIs, but not all of them -- so far as I know, I'm not overly familiar with robots -- and not all AIs are robots. In my world they take the form of ships and space stations. They are sentient, and very smart, and honestly some of the very best people in the universe.

Station is the AI that looks after the Garden, as well as the rest of Athoek Station, on which it's located. She is the station, in a very real sense. There are consoles and sensors throughout the ship for Station to keep track of things, and to be able to speak to you. She'll also be the main one providing you with information about the Garden and its plants, since she knows much more than Breq and I do.

I see.. I think. A sentient ship then? I take it that you don't mean ships on the sea.

That's so interesting. I'm looking forward to learning more about it. I know nothing at all about that sort of thing, but I do like to learn and I'm excited to do so. I can talk with plants, if that helps.

When I say ships, I mean space ships. However, none of our ships are here. Station is not a ship in the same sense; she was built to orbit around one planet, not to move through space. She's a very nice AI, as long as you don't get on her bad side by destroying parts of the station or hurting someone inside it.

You can talk with plants! That's an interesting ability. How does that [...] work?

Ah, okay. I've heard about some of it, but I've never seen one up close. We have air ships though, but none that go very high. Just above cities and things. I'll keep that in mind.

I'm a druid, it's a spell that I've learned. Most of my abilities are nature based.

I know even less about spells and druids than you do about space ships, I think. I have a vague concept of spells being [...] magic, but that's about it.

Well you've got that part right. I can use magic as a druid. Perhaps I can help out then, and we can learn from each other.
