Greetings everyone. It would be a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Most recently in my life, most people call me Breq, but I am also Justice of Toren. Please forgive the immediate discussion of business; however, I have some issues that need to be addressed.

Athoek Station, part of it, has arrived with me, and Station - its AI - is in need of more assistance than I can provide. The Botanical Gardens, recently repaired, will need regular work to maintain it. Given enough time, I can take care of the rest of Station. The Undergarden was mostly repaired, and I can fix what remains. However, living things cannot be ignored for so long. Unfortunately, having just arrived, I do not have local currency on a scale to pay anyone yet. I do have more than enough food, we grow our own, as well as tea and other options, pursuant to conversation and your needs.

While I could spend all my hours maintaining Station, and I will spend a good number of them doing just that, I am also interested in gaining paid employment. I have roughly two thousand years experience in the military, five years experience as civilian security, as well as experience in a multitude of jobs from janitorial to sewing to sports. I am fluent in more than sixty languages and learn new ones easily. If you have means and need for any of my skills or ones I could learn, I am interested in speaking with you.

I work with plants. And I'm studying them in school. I could help with your gardens, at least until I start school. I have at least a month before it starts.

[...] I'm Katniss Everdeen.

I would not want to detract from your studies. Your help would be appreciated. Many of the plants are not from Earth, but Station knows all about them and can answer any questions you have about them, better than I could.

A pleasure to meet you, Katniss.

I like learning about new plants, and I'm pretty good at it. I'm going to be starting on a Horticulture degree at the community college in the fall, so it's not that it [...] detracts from my studies, so much as I don't know if I'll have time for school and my job at the florist's and working on your gardens. But if you were offering a paying job then, I could probably stay.

You, too, [...] Breq.

Congratulations on your studies. No matter where one goes, horticulture is important to maintaining life. That is understandable, Katniss. It is my intention, whenever I can afford it, to offer pay for the work done in Station's Botanical Gardens. At this time, I can make no promises. I will remain open about what I can offer.

Thank you. I've only survived this long because I knew plants, and how to hunt. They weren't something I could study in school at home, but my dad taught me what he knew about them.

We don't have to talk about that now. I have time to help and I like the work. I'd be learning a lot in exchange, and if you want to offer something else so that you don't owe me, that's fine too. It would only need to be money if it was my only job, because unfortunately I do need money for things here. At home I could get a lot of things by bartering, but not as much here.

You're welcome. Planets often provide everything a person needs to survive, but it takes skill and effort to do such a thing. I have sometimes survived by those same means.

Where I come from, not everything is paid for with money. There is much a citizen was due so long as they accepted an assignment for work, but across most parts of society, some things were exchanged as gifts, similar if somewhat different to what bartering means. From what I have seen, people do not receive food here directly, it is bought. Should you find the food acceptable, I would be happy to provide you with enough for you and your household.

They're definitely good skills to have for when you need them.

[...] Technically my district at home offered us food, but we had to put our names in for reaping extra times in order to get it. Otherwise food was mostly just something we had to figure out for ourselves. I'd definitely be willing to make an exchange for food.

I agree. And it is difficult if you lack them and find them necessary.

What were you being reaped for? I am not used to that term being used with humans. But I can offer you some when you first arrive. Athoek Station is located outside of town via [road]. I am still working toward obtaining local means of transportation.

We were reaped for the Games. Every year, two children from each district had to participate in the games, fighting in an arena to survive and to earn money, food, and "glory" for their district. It was all televised for the entertainment of the Capitol. Some districts bought more into the glory of it than others - mine never did. [...] My world isn't a good one. This one is somewhat better; the Games don't exist here, at least. Except as stories.

I usually walk everywhere, but there are cars, if you know how to drive, or bikes, which are a little cheaper. I've considered getting a bike now that the town is bigger, but I'm still just used to walking.

This is still happening?! [...] I was told we could not affect anything in the worlds we came from. I presume that includes worlds other people are from.

I know how to drive and to fly. I have been used to walking and running; however, I am still recovering from an injury. So I am looking into a car or motorcycle.

For a little while longer. Apparently I've accidentally caused some trouble that will start a rebellion, which is what the Games were designed to prevent.

That makes sense. I really don't know much about either of those.

That is the kind of trouble worth causing, accidentally or not. I wish death to your tyrant.

The ones here differ somewhat from those I am most experienced with. But they have engines that run off combustion, to greater or lesser efficiency, and basic means to control their movement. A motorcycle would cost less money and take up less space, but I could move more cargo or people with a car.

I agree. Apparently I get to kill him. I'm looking forward to that part.

Are you planning to have to move a lot of cargo or people? You could always get one kind and then sell it and get another, if your situation changes.

I am glad to hear it.

I am not sure. For the most part, we can be self-sufficient. But I imagine that we will develop social contacts throughout the area, wherever there are displaced people. You are correct, that is an option. I simply am not sure how long it will take me to earn the funds necessary for that. The money I had with me is completely the wrong currency.

A lot of people around here have figured out their own methods of transportation. Some people have magical ways of doing it and you can pay them to take you places.

That is good to know. Are any of these magical means able to set up permanent transportation between two locations? That would require someone's direct involvement less often.

Some of them, I think. There were people who made portals for people that go to an island where we could be safe if something bad happened here. There are also bracelets available at the military base that can bring you there, and back home, if you haven't already gotten one of those.

But probably the people who made those portals could do another one for you, if they wanted to. I don't know if they'd charge you or bargain for it, or how much it would be.

I have not tested the bracelet. I chose to come out to Station by means that would not cut me off from it during transit.

Speaking with people who make portals will be added to my to do list, even if they must wait until I have more means.

I haven't tested mine either. But my brother's friend made them, and he said that they work. I don't know if it would cut you off from Station or not, though.

I think Pixie and Eliot were the ones that were doing them. But I'm not sure, and there are probably other people who could make them too. If you asked about it on the network, someone would be able to tell you.

I do not know either, and I did not want to take that risk.

I believe it can wait a few days. People do not seem to post every day on this network.

I don't know if there's a way to get your Station to the island with us. How big is it?

There's no rules about it. I don't know if anyone really cares how often people post.

Station went in orbit around a planet, but it is embedded in the ground here. It would take more than a human sized portal or the bracelet to move it. For Station, it is fairly small. Well less than half of it is here. But the Gardens are five acres.

There may not be rules, but there are customs. I am not used to using this kind of network. But you are right that I should not put it off too long. Something could happen.

Well, there are a lot of powerful people here. But that might still be more than they're able to manage. I really don't know. [...] Five acres of garden sounds amazing.

Things do happen very quickly here, and without warning.

I will not depend on it. But we will do what we can. [...] Three acres of it is a lake.

If things are anything like our arrival. I am glad to have what warning I can, even if that is simply to be prepared for things to change in an instant.

Probably Station would be okay here. Usually buildings and gardens don't get destroyed. Just people get hurt, or [...] changed, or confused.

Sometimes right before we change locations, there's an earthquake. But not always.
