Greetings everyone. It would be a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Most recently in my life, most people call me Breq, but I am also Justice of Toren. Please forgive the immediate discussion of business; however, I have some issues that need to be addressed.

Athoek Station, part of it, has arrived with me, and Station - its AI - is in need of more assistance than I can provide. The Botanical Gardens, recently repaired, will need regular work to maintain it. Given enough time, I can take care of the rest of Station. The Undergarden was mostly repaired, and I can fix what remains. However, living things cannot be ignored for so long. Unfortunately, having just arrived, I do not have local currency on a scale to pay anyone yet. I do have more than enough food, we grow our own, as well as tea and other options, pursuant to conversation and your needs.

While I could spend all my hours maintaining Station, and I will spend a good number of them doing just that, I am also interested in gaining paid employment. I have roughly two thousand years experience in the military, five years experience as civilian security, as well as experience in a multitude of jobs from janitorial to sewing to sports. I am fluent in more than sixty languages and learn new ones easily. If you have means and need for any of my skills or ones I could learn, I am interested in speaking with you.

Um. It means they're made of metal and mechanical parts. They don't look human. Usually they aren't human. But they're modeled after them sometimes. Yeah. I mean, we usually work as a team. I don't know? He's with me. He's just come with us on our quest. He brought me back to life after I died to save the world, so...

They aren't human. But if they are intelligent, they are something else, their own species. Worthy of respect and the rights that come with being conscious.

It sounds as though he's fond of you. But how much is he deciding to do? How much is being required and expected and simply then provided?

Yeah. Most of them don't do their own deciding things. Most of them are programmed for a specific task. Festus is the only one.

Well, yeah. I fixed him twice now. I could have given him a new control disk after his got damaged, but I didn't because it would have killed who he was. I look after him. I think you have the wrong idea about us.

Festus may be the only one you know. But he is not the only one.

Replacing him with another intelligence would have been murder. You look after him as best you think to do. I don't have many ideas about you. But I care how artificial intelligences, whatever the source, are treated.

I do. He's my family and I would do anything to protect him. He has more freedoms at home because mortals can't see him due to the mist, but here, they can, so I'm trying to find a way to make him invisible so he can do what he'd like.

A noble sentiment. This place does not seem quite familiar with AIs. Alexa, Siri, and the like not truly having their own intelligences. Many people seem frightened of being found out here.
