Greetings everyone. It would be a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Most recently in my life, most people call me Breq, but I am also Justice of Toren. Please forgive the immediate discussion of business; however, I have some issues that need to be addressed.

Athoek Station, part of it, has arrived with me, and Station - its AI - is in need of more assistance than I can provide. The Botanical Gardens, recently repaired, will need regular work to maintain it. Given enough time, I can take care of the rest of Station. The Undergarden was mostly repaired, and I can fix what remains. However, living things cannot be ignored for so long. Unfortunately, having just arrived, I do not have local currency on a scale to pay anyone yet. I do have more than enough food, we grow our own, as well as tea and other options, pursuant to conversation and your needs.

While I could spend all my hours maintaining Station, and I will spend a good number of them doing just that, I am also interested in gaining paid employment. I have roughly two thousand years experience in the military, five years experience as civilian security, as well as experience in a multitude of jobs from janitorial to sewing to sports. I am fluent in more than sixty languages and learn new ones easily. If you have means and need for any of my skills or ones I could learn, I am interested in speaking with you.

Yes. However, our words are attached to a magical [...] energy that can be used to cause harm. It's [...] we use our wands to focus the magic that exists in our bodies already. The words just are a means of stating what the spell is. Occulus reparo, for instance, repairs broken glasses. Accio summons things to us. Of course, we have to say what it is we want to summon. There are spells designed to harm, spells that are forbidden, but some people don't really concern themselves with that. Avada Kedavra is the killing curse. Crucio causes severe pain throughout the entire body. If used enough, it can drive a person mad, break their brain as it were. Imperio is used to control a person. They are completely under the caster's power unless they are able to break from it. The person can make them do anything. Even something they wouldn't normally.

I'm not sure if that explains it. Some objects are cursed to multiply in number when touched so the person doesn't know the real from the not real. Some are more physical in nature. It is a precise art, breaking curses. It's a mix of figuring out the exact spell and then using that to figure out how to reverse it.

That magical energy seems to be far more flexible in its effects than the energies I am familiar with, at least in how we are discussing them now.

People can forbid what they like. That does not, in and of itself, prevent those actions from being taken, especially those who find a way to get away with it.

Do these spells have limitations? Does Imperio work on everyone? What determines or limits one's ability to access and use this magical energy? Knowledge and training, certainly. But should someone be taught everything they could, what are the limitations?

Why were you using curse breaking to enter graves?

I suppose it's a bit different than the muggle sorts.

No. It doesn't. We've been pretty aware of that.

Sometimes? Imperio works on everyone, but some, with enough strength of will, can break through the spell and regain control of themselves. We are not taught how to cast those spells. We are taught about them to prepare ourselves in the even that something should happen. You cannot make food out of thin air. You cannot make money out of thin air. There are other limitations, but I'm drawing a bit of a blank.

Treasure. If we're being honest. I guess I didn't think about it before.

At the same time, kinetic energy is responsible for many things. But I understand it, so I can follow and understand how it applies to many different things. This one is new to me. Not everyone understands physics, to understand muggle sorts. I would guess that is the same with magical energy.

That does not sound good.

I doubt anyone knows whether she is one of those people until she is in a situation she'd be better off avoiding altogether. A shame about food.

Hmm.

Muggle sciences are a bit above me. I haven't tried to learn, though, so that's probably mostly my fault.

We're in the middle of a war, I guess you could say. This guy that wants to control wizards and imprison those he believes are less than him or kill them. It really depends. His followers were in the midst of invading my wedding reception when I arrived here.

Most likely, yes. You can multiply food that already exists.

Some kinds of learning are easier when we are younger. But they are by no means impossible.

Better to stop him before he gains power. It's harder later. That is all around terrible timing.

That still proves useful. Has it been used to eliminate starvation and poor nutrition?

I think I'd manage with time.

Basically, yes. It's been a long year. A long couple of years.

We're kind of a hidden society because we have been hunted by people without magic.

Most likely.

May it only be a couple more.

You would seem to have the advantage with your magic. But numbers do count for something. Still, it is possible to work toward better ends. Hiding has its limitations.

Yeah. I guess here we could probably do a little more. We'd just have to be careful about it. We can't draw too much attention to ourselves even here.

What are your reasons for that here?

Because we've been told we have to. We can't risk being discovered.

I have few inclinations toward announcing my identity to the wider world here. But I am curious as to why we cannot risk it.

We're just meant to keep a low profile. For the most part, the non-displaced seem to have fuzzy memories about things, but that doesn't mean it will always happen and I'm not really sure what that'll mean for us as a whole.

No, the consequences are unclear. We are living in an alien land, even if it is human.
