Greetings everyone. It would be a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Most recently in my life, most people call me Breq, but I am also Justice of Toren. Please forgive the immediate discussion of business; however, I have some issues that need to be addressed.

Athoek Station, part of it, has arrived with me, and Station - its AI - is in need of more assistance than I can provide. The Botanical Gardens, recently repaired, will need regular work to maintain it. Given enough time, I can take care of the rest of Station. The Undergarden was mostly repaired, and I can fix what remains. However, living things cannot be ignored for so long. Unfortunately, having just arrived, I do not have local currency on a scale to pay anyone yet. I do have more than enough food, we grow our own, as well as tea and other options, pursuant to conversation and your needs.

While I could spend all my hours maintaining Station, and I will spend a good number of them doing just that, I am also interested in gaining paid employment. I have roughly two thousand years experience in the military, five years experience as civilian security, as well as experience in a multitude of jobs from janitorial to sewing to sports. I am fluent in more than sixty languages and learn new ones easily. If you have means and need for any of my skills or ones I could learn, I am interested in speaking with you.

That's good, then. I'm a much better gunner than I am a pilot as well, but that's what friends that are pilots are for.

Yeah. Not everyone's assigned those duties. Especially not the higher ups. I can't imagine Phasma cleaning.

It's the name the First Order gave me. If I had a name other than that, I've never known it. I was taken from my parents when I was young, too young to remember them or really anything about them. I think FN-2187 and the other similar names made it easier to make us less human. It made us soldiers more than men or women. But now I'm a part of the Resistance and I guess I'll still be a soldier of some sort, but not the same as before. Did someone give you the name Breq or did you choose it?

It is far more difficult to fly and shoot at the same time than it is to split duties.

I did most of the cleaning for my officers. But most people start low enough that some amount of janitorial work is required. And a willingness to do so is important. I was a Fleet Captain when I come from, but I am here scrubbing Station's floors.

And if they can make you less human, other humans are more easily less human too. It is so much easier to do things that way. But that does not erase anyone's humanity, their self. [...] It is not wrong to be a soldier. Even if much war is done immorally.

I chose the name Breq. To travel, I have made identities for myself. Breq is a Gerentate name, and it suited my person. It has lasted longer than I expected or initially intended. But it still serves me. I used it on the identification I made here.

Yeah. That's true. We have ships set up for separate flight and shooting.

I wasn't really anyone of high rank. Troopers don't really tend to be much by way of leadership. Maybe a few of us would have risen, but who can say?

I don't mind the fighting. I never minded it before with the First Order. I was a good soldier. I was perfectly capable. I just had the defect of not giving up on what the First Order saw as lost causes. It took the loss of a friend to change things. After that, I just couldn't do it anymore.

Is Gerentate is [...] place? People? My boyfriend gave me the name Finn. He wasn't my boyfriend at the time, though. We were kind of supposed to be enemies.

Most of my combat experience, though not all, was on the ground. It was what I was meant to do.

Common troops are often held in place. I was an exception, and I have started training my experienced soldiers in turn. But there is only so much to do while a ship is traveling between places. And people need to be kept busy. Cleaning was one way to channel that energy.

So often it takes some form of loss, some bad event, to change what we do. But I am no better than you on that.

The Gerentate is another culture, one that looked similar enough to me that I could pass, given I was nowhere near it. I would not have gotten as far as I did if my identity had been known. [...] Names come from somewhere. That is a perfectly good place. How did supposed enemies become something else?

Some fighting takes place on the ground. Some in space.

Yeah. I can see how that's the case.

I doubt anyone's perfect. Some people are given chances to be better, but don't take it. I'm not sure if I'm better or worse than either side, really.

Oh. That's interesting. I'm pretty sure that people being aware you were a ship would have particular ideas. [...] Well, he was there after my friend died. He was being tortured. He was a pilot. He was my ticket out, so I broke him out of his imprisonment and sort of escaped at the same time. Somehow it grew from there.

Indeed.

I can say many things about my life. But having nothing to do has rarely been part of it.

No, no one is. Everyone has the chance to choose to be better. But the consequences can be severe. Many people don't want to face them. Are you better or worse than you were? That I find a meaningful question for myself.

I would have been dead. Along with the rest of me. I am doing my best to bring down the lord of the Radch, the most powerful human in my universe. At some point, it will not end well. [...] That's more reason to stick with him than some. Congratulations on getting out.

Yeah. I think here is the first time I've had to look for things to do.

I'm not sure. I guess so? It's hard to say.

That would definitely be bad. Most things do not end well. [...] I'm happy that I got the chance to escape. I'm glad that I met Rey and Poe.

It was disorienting the first time, for me.

Fair enough.

If everything ends badly, then we may as well attempt for the best. [...] Then at least there's that, no matter how it ends.

It's definitely an unusual sort of thing.

Yeah. I'm not sure what is going to happen but I guess we have to try.

I never expected to accomplish what I have. It's worth seeing what else I can do.

Yeah. Absolutely. I'm not sure what is going to happen here, but so far, I've been okay.
