Greetings everyone. It would be a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Most recently in my life, most people call me Breq, but I am also Justice of Toren. Please forgive the immediate discussion of business; however, I have some issues that need to be addressed.

Athoek Station, part of it, has arrived with me, and Station - its AI - is in need of more assistance than I can provide. The Botanical Gardens, recently repaired, will need regular work to maintain it. Given enough time, I can take care of the rest of Station. The Undergarden was mostly repaired, and I can fix what remains. However, living things cannot be ignored for so long. Unfortunately, having just arrived, I do not have local currency on a scale to pay anyone yet. I do have more than enough food, we grow our own, as well as tea and other options, pursuant to conversation and your needs.

While I could spend all my hours maintaining Station, and I will spend a good number of them doing just that, I am also interested in gaining paid employment. I have roughly two thousand years experience in the military, five years experience as civilian security, as well as experience in a multitude of jobs from janitorial to sewing to sports. I am fluent in more than sixty languages and learn new ones easily. If you have means and need for any of my skills or ones I could learn, I am interested in speaking with you.

That's true. I am just rather bound in place by my duties, but I suppose anyone with duties to a family or a job would be in much the same position.

The lack of magic is not a bad thing. The hunger for it, to the point of doing something risky, was. But I have learned that lesson.

Yes, and even seemingly good people can get caught in that trap of justifying such treatment. My parents were among them. It was one of their worst decisions, and I haven't forgiven them for it, even though it was not me that they harmed that way.

I will go back and put them to rest eventually. As well as rebuild my city. Presumably that is happening at home anyway, even though I am here. That is the theory, at least.

We are all bound to something. Those duties may tie you to a place or to travel. But we have to choose, whether it is worth it to stay bound how we are.

I can imagine that would be. Good.

No matter how good we are, we can all do something horrible and wrong, when put in that circumstance, into one where our choices are few or look like none. Many people don't learn that until they do something awful. Then you can commit to it, or you can admit you made a mistake and change. You don't have to forgive them, even though they were your parents, even though they are dead.

A curious theory. Some physicists have written of technical possibilities, but this is the first I have experienced anything like it. What shapes the theory here?

My country and my people are worth it. I am not sorry to be bound to them.

I'm fairly certain of who I am, even in difficult times. There are already a number of horrible choices I know that I will never make. Many of them choices that my parents made on my behalf. I am very critical of them and there are many things I don't forgive them for, but I still love them and miss them. And that is just [...] how it will always be.

Mainly, the theory stems from the fact that people come from different points in timelines, and do not remember others disappearing. For instance, my brother is from a point in our timeline before me, but he did not disappear at that time, and my lover is from a time after me, but I was still there with him up until he left. The same holds true for many others, I think, since it is widely believed that our timelines at home are unaffected by our presence here.

I am glad for you.

We may still be presented with situations we do not expect. Even being here is unexpected. Who knows what else we will face? [...] Feelings are complicated. They do not always make sense or have to.

Any alternate theory I can imagine in the short time I have been here also involves multiple universes. But that would still, for the most part, make it effectively true. [...] If they are not affected, that is a blessing and a curse.

There are many possibilities here, many of them pleasant, though not always. When I arrived we were on a cruise ship, which docked in multiple different lands. They were quite fascinating. But the ship was also attacked by pirates, which was much less pleasant.

I hope they are not affected, because my world needs me. I do believe that the theory holds, but I still worry that it might not.

I do not easily lower my guard. It sounds prudent to be prepared for anything, with or without even that we have with us here. Was ship okay?

So far as it was explained to me, we can do nothing about it either way. We have to trust in others, if the theory doesn't hold.

Much of the ship's systems were disabled by the pirates, and there was some structural damage in places after the fight. But we repaired some of it, and the ship's robots took care of the rest of it. It was alright when we left it.

Yes, there does not seem to be much in the way of anything to do about it. I'm sure everyone here has something to worry about at home, even if many prefer to be here instead.

That is good to hear.

There are certainly many immediate concerns here. [...] Were Station and I both to return, I would choose that.

The [...] homes that come with people do seem to disappear at the same time as they do. At least that's what I've seen people say.

That is a small comfort. I would not want Station to be here alone.

Indeed not. Being here alone -- without anyone you personally know -- would be very difficult for anyone, even if there are others around.

It would be difficult. But it is a difficulty I am no stranger to in recent years.

Very often, multiple people from any given world will show up in a row. My brother was here for some time alone, and then my lover, and then me, not long after him. If there are others that you're missing, there is a strong possibility they will come here. Presuming, of course, that is something you might want.

Whether I would like their company is very different from whether being here is something I would want for them.

Should you need any assistance, there are many here who will help you. And you can also make new friends amongst our group. No one here is entirely alone.

It has been more welcoming than many places. I am not well known for making friends.

Most of the time I think he ends up enjoying himself. And I do let him alone if he insists on it.

You'll probably have that chance here, if it's something you want.

I have yet to think about it. Working on Station will give me time.
