Avoiding the question, yet your initial response was to ask if I was actually serious, which indicates that you had made an assumption despite your claims that you had not.

I've become ~~friends~~ quite fond of Miss Crawley, she considers me her friend. As you two have become close, I thought it would be appropriate for us to aquatint ourselves with one another. She has praised you several times in my presence.
