BETSY BRADDOCK

Scott told me to talk to you about my plans for after I graduate in June. I [...] haven't really thought about it a lot, and I don't really know where to start. High school is already more schooling than was available to me at home.

FRIENDS*
I'm going to be graduating from high school in June. And I'm talking to a counselor about what to do after that. [...] She's probably going to ask me what I want to do, but I have no idea what I want.

I like plants, and my biology class is really interesting in general. But I'm also not sure how well I'm doing in it.

Do you want to set up an official appointment where I can pull your current grades and transcripts and we can go over what you might be interested and what you might need to do for it come graduation?

I guess? I don't want to waste any of your time if there isn't anything I want to end up doing.

Katniss, it's not a waste of my time.

Then yes. Let's do that.

It's helpful to talk things out, and that's what I'm here for.

If you decide on anything, then we can plot a course for you after school. And if not, then we can still discuss other options.

And for the record? I'll never understand why they expect people to know what they want to do without trying several things out.

Thanks.

I just never had the option to even keep going with school, much less do something with that education. [...] And I'm not sure I'd manage it if I tried.

Your world was very oppressive, from what I understand, and one of the marks of keeping people oppressive is taking away education. I'm not surprise that there was no option for it.

And oppressed people often find themselves struggling just to survive so even if there was the option, it may not be available for you.

This is one of the reasons that Charles Xavier started a school for mutants. Many of us had been kicked from our homes or school, so a good deal of us understand some of what you were going through.

There were options in some of the other districts, like District 3 where they worked in engineering and technology. We learned basic reading and math and coal, because that was what we were supposed to produce. Some of the wealthier people learned their family's trades, like doctors.

I honestly don't even know that many of the people in the Capitol were very educated. They didn't really have to be.

[...] I definitely appreciate getting to learn more here.

Reading, math, and coal. I suspect that a lot of your people died young from lung diseases then.

They don't need to be, the Capitol. They have the money.

Then figure out something you want to do, with or without further schooling.

Most people died of starvation or explosions in the mines before they could have problems with their lungs, but yes, some.

I'm working with plants right now. I like it, but I don't know that it's what I want to do. I'd rather be outside working with plants.

Sometimes what you do for stress relief isn't quite the same as what you'll do for a living. Oftentimes, most people don't get to do what they love for work.

Hunting is what I've usually done for a living. Which includes gathering edible plants. But [...] there are people who study plants, their properties and stuff.

I think I could be good at that maybe. If the classes aren't too hard or expensive.
