Bella's gone. George is gone. I don't know what to say about any of this, but I feel like I'm losing all my friends slowly and it sucks.

No. You could. You really could. I have only been able to sing once and it was because I was moon sick and I was a siren for like a night. It was weird.

Hopefully no one was called to their deaths. I'll admit some curiosity; I have often enjoyed The Odyssey.

No. They were just all in love with me. My dad was so mad.

Well, I can see how a parent might get worried about that. But if you were sick, that is not truly your fault.

It's just that [...] the moon used to affect us a lot. Once we made a hurricane because we were under the influence of the moon and we almost killed my boyfriend Lewis. Once Emma ate all the lobster for her dad's birthday party. Once I was a siren and made a whole lot of boys fall in love with me and made my dad pretty upset. Not at me, but at the boys. He didn't know what was happening, though.

That does sound like a lot. It makes me surprised no one would mistake you all for selkies or werewolves or something along those lines.

Other than the lobster, those do all sound quite concerning. Depending on the amount of lobster, that sounds remarkable.

No one actually knew anything about us. Unless we told them and we barely told anyone.

It was a pretty good amount. The affect differed based on the moon.

Well most people do not believe in the spectacular unless irrevocably confronted with it.

How has it been affecting you here? If you do not mind me asking.

Yeah. And then they try to make you into a science experiment. Well, maybe not the people here.

It hasn't. It hasn't affected us in a while. The first two years were a lot, though.

Someone or something can simply be wondrous. It does not require more.

I am glad you got through it - mostly okay? - then.

People don't always believe that.

Yeah. Me, too.

I do. And even if I want to know more, Jesus, you aren't a science experiment. No one is. And those people are not welcome to my friends.

It's what makes it difficult to open up to people. Not even my family knows.

Perhaps it's a forward question, but how did you become a mermaid? Most stories I know of them, they're another species with parents merfolk as well.

I have tried to tell my sister some specifics, and my parents know broadly of my interests. But they are taken as curious eccentricities.

I found a special place on the Full Moon and jumped in. I didn't really want to, but I had no other choice. So the next day, I turned into a mermaid. It was kind of surprising.

My sister found out once and she tried to out me to everyone, so I managed to convince her that it was a storybook and she'd been wrong.

I would very much like to hear more sometime. It really doesn't need to be now. It does have something in common with stories for werewolves, but they have never had a lone claim to the moon.

Hmm, where was her heart? In the right place? Your identity shouldn't be outed without your consent, either way.

It's a lot to tell. But the becoming a mermaid isn't where most of the story is.

Kim's heart is never in the right place until she realizes that she's being a selfish brat and shouldn't fuck people's lives up so much. She's my sister and I love her, but she doesn't consider other people.

Perhaps not. But I find the whole of it curious. Both you and mermaids are interesting. I've read some on mermaids, but as I've explored forests more than seas, I haven't explored it immensely.

She has some more growing up to do, it sounds.

That's not always a bad thing. Too many of us grow up too fast.

Mako Island. Zane was being a colossal ass as usual. Because of him, I ended up in a boat of sorts. Then Emma, Rikki, and I ended up on Mako. Usually no one goes there because of the shark population. But we went and we were exploring when I fell down a hole. Emma came after me. Rikki after her. The only way out was through the pool. At the time, I was afraid of water. I had no other choice. Something about the water, the moon. It changed us. There's a lot to tell.

I wish she'd grow up a little.
