Has anyone ever tried blending magic and technology? What were your results?

I'm really curious if there's a tried and true way to combine the two. Since they both work with energies within the world I would think there is, but I haven't been able to find a good cross point for them yet.

I guess it depends on what you consider technology vs magic? If I construct a machine powered on magic, does that count as technology or magic only?

That's a good question! I guess it depends on how we're technically defining what is technology based on the current social structure norms and standard definitions of the terminology.

The cavemen once considered the wheel a great technological advancement, but I don't think either of us is talking about something like that. :)

May I ask what machine you powered with magic?

A couple different ones, actually. Neither were my design, however.

The first as a machine my friend called a "quarterback". It could rewind time in a specific location at 15 second intervals.

I also helped construct a Tesla Flection which allowed us create a sort of unstable pocket dimension to interact with an alternate timeline.

There were mechanical components to both devices, but both required magic to work.

Oh! Okay! So these were machines with inherently magical in functionality then too? No magic powered toaster in your future?

I've been trying to figure out how to combine tech and magic for amplification of magical abilities, but keep coming up short so far. :(

You want to use technology to amplify magical power?

...I don't think that's possible? That sounds like a good way to get yourself killed? Magical batteries are possible to create when a spell requires more energy than the magic users are able to put forth themselves but I'm not entirely clear on how to create them.

Well, if we can identify the appropriate frequencies and wavelengths that magical exchange happens on where it can effectively short circuit and stop electronics, it may be able to reverse engineer what sort of energies we've already identified as useable forces within the our current technological spectrum and correlate them to the mystic spheres of influence. From there it would theoretically be possible to cross the two and what current technological instruments compliment instead of control, or disrupt.

I was thinking that from there we would be able to effectively allow for creation of tools for better channeling, focusing and controlling of currently existing magical energies and prescences surrounding us.

I'm just not doing very well figuring out where on the spectrum of understood science all that falls yet. :(

Practice, study and casting with other people is probably easier?

Practice is preferential!

Though a more thorough understanding of the theoretically and practical mechanics of spell structure, casting, and application could only be beneficial from a scientific standpoint.

This could make magic less erratic, safer and more accessible as well. :)

It is already...?

Maybe you should show me what you know. Unless magic on your world is wildly different from mine, it may have more in common with science than you give it credit for.

I can disrupt technology? Lights on, lights off, or just fry the circuits. I don't think I've ever had an occasion that needed me to do anything else.

Hi you're aweI have to actively want to do it though. Use magic with that purpose. My magic won't just mess with the wifi or anything.

I'm kind of a lot familiar with your magic. My world doesn't really have a separate society for magic and non-magic people, so it's lucky for me it doesn't happen on its own.

From the books about my world? Loads of people have read those. I think it's brilliant.

Do you have to hide your magic, then, and try to blend into the non-magical world?

Yeah, I'm one of them. I've read them all more than once.

Yes. I'm from a small town, so there's always a lot incidents with animal attacks, gas leaks and mind wiping when the supernatural population gets out of control.

A fan! I love meeting fans.

Ah, yes, that sounds somewhat familiar. Certainly there have been times when Obliviators are called in to erase the memories of a muggle who's stumbled across something they shouldn't.

Guilty. I can't remember the amount of times I wished there had been some place like Hogwarts for me.

Mostly we'd use vampires. They have compulsion capabilities to make people think what they want. It can be useful when ordinary people start to notice weird things.

It really is a shame everyone can't go. Hogwarts is brilliant.

Interesting! I hadn't heard of vampires having that ability. [...] Potentially also makes them a bit more dangerous, too, doesn't it?

I can only imagine.

Yes, they are. Depends on the kind of person they are though. But then that makes me potentially dangerous because of what I can do as well.

It's a shame I didn't get to know you before Christmas. I got a whole Hogwarts feast from Santa. [...] Which still isn't the whole Hogwarts experience, of course, but it's one of the best parts!

Of course, I completely agree. Potentially dangerous doesn't make anyone a bad person, and anyone with powers has the choice whether or not to abuse them.

I wasn't here then, though that sounds amazing and I'm so jealous I missed it.

Exactly. Though that being said, I've met some vampires who are massive assholes. But I've also met some that I love. But I think they're a lot different in my world than they are yours.

With any luck, I'll be able to ask for it again next Christmas.

Same could be said of wizards from my world. Some would even argue I'm one of the massive assholes, or at least was, and they wouldn't be entirely wrong. But yes, it does sound as though they are different. Vampires in my world [...] are not as feared as werewolves, but not very much more socially acceptable, in a lot of places.

Don't tease my stomach.

One of my friends was a werewolf. I think it's the opposite in my world, werewolves are more of a danger around the full moon, but vampires are potentially dangerous always. Witches, vampires and werewolves are usually at war or hold some unsteady truce with each other. I think my group of friends is a rare exception to the rule.

We have Molly Weasley here, she's equally good. You should get into her good graces before she gets back to her kitchen, then she'll feed you.

That's an interesting difference. And not untrue, I've always thought that werewolves got an unfair rap. Although there are also many who entirely deserve their bad reputations. [...] Are you a motley, assorted band of friends, then? That's the best kind.

I would love nothing more, except I have no idea how to do that. I'm pretty sure showing up at her door would just be weird.

Yeah. We've lost a few, permanently, but our little circle of trust has has vampires, werewolves, witches, humans, hunters, Hunters Capital, I was even a ghost for a while.

Let me know if you manage to talk to her somehow, otherwise I could probably invite you to something. There might be a group of magical folk starting up - although people have considered it before and not done much with it - so that might be a way to meet her, potentially.

You were a ghost? How did you get un-ghosted?

I saw the talk of a potential group for magic. But hearing that I'm not sure it will actually take off. Hopefully I'll find a way to meet her, she seems like such a badass.

It involved having dead ancestors willing to bend the rules of the afterlife, and some alternate dimension travelling. It took a while.

Do you think maybe it's a frequency disruption? And if it is, does that mean that magic and technology function along the same wavelengths?

Oh wow! You must be really good with this stuff if you're able to influence larger things like cars and elevators. Can you also move them with your abilities, or just interfere with them?

I've always practiced on my own. I had my Grams as a teacher for a short while, but now it's just me. So mostly I learned through do or die situations.
