I've filled most of a notebook talking to local gardeners and botanists about plants that can grow in small spaces. I've got photographs and samples and I think I'm going to spend the evening planning a good layout for the balcony outside my room, if anyone would like to join me at the cafe on the ship.

I'd very much like to, if you wouldn't mind the company.

Please do. I wouldn't have offered otherwise.

Thanks.

Have you learned anything particularly interesting about the plants here so far?

There's a reason I managed to fill so many pages! I did pay attention to which ones are used for making teas and soaps and things.

That'll be handy. It'll be nice to have something green to take care of.

Do you work with plants at your home?

I have a garden where I spend a lot of my time.

Do you have a favorite thing to grow?

I'm glad you were able to get some information that will work for you here.

It's much greener here than what I managed to see of Atlantis.

Considering the author for it that does not surprise me.

I never got underwater there, either, so I'm not sure what kind of plants they might have had down there. But you're right, Tolkein's well known for his descriptions of the environment. Seeing it in person is wonderful.

One of those that did may be able to give your more accurate descriptions of the ones that were there.

Yeah, I have been. You remember me? There were trees that spoke and trees that were just trees.

Ents? I think I remember those. There are a lot of cultural traditions of tree spirits on Earth as well.

I know the Greeks have dryads, which are female spirits that are connected to a tree. For Bantu it's more that the spirit is in the tree. If you're making a drum you have to be careful to keep the spirit in the wood so that it still has its voice, and the same with boats because the spirit will protect you from drowning.

Of course. I'm intending to come back to the ship every night for the rest of the stop, so whenever you have time is fine.

If I were coming back to the ship, I would join you, but I've been camping out. I'm going to bring back lots of samples and my own notes, though.

I'll definitely be willing to show you.

What have you been using or thinking of using for potting them on the ship? That's the only part I haven't figured out, mostly because I've been out in the woods since we got here. I could bring back some wood to build boxes, but if there are pots or boxes already available in any of the shops that would be easier.

There are shops that have differently sized pots and a few planter boxes. It's not as wide a variety as some places might have, but it should be at least adequate.

Oh, good. I was hoping there would be. I'll make a stop there soon, before I bring anything back.
