This ship is a little too fancy for my tastes, but I won't complain about everything being free. I hope they have a very large food supply, with the portions they're giving out.

AVA AYALA + ALINA

Sorry to have missed you last night; Alina and I were exploring the ship. I was told you will be sharing our cabin. I'm Mal.

Yeah, free's not bad at all.

Hopefully they have places to stop for supplies, in case we run out.

I'm sure they do, unless they expect us to start fishing for our own dinner.

I wouldn't mind that, actually, except it would be hard from a boat this size.

Yeah, it probably would be.

How have you settled in on the ship? No seasickness, I hope?

No, none of that. I'm not really settled in general, though. I feel a little trapped.

I know what you mean. Funnily enough, I felt freer on the ships I sailed on at home, even though they were much smaller. More time spent out in the air, up in the sails, I suppose.

It's a fortress masquerading as a ship, if you ask me.

I think I would have chosen the word 'palace', but I can see what you mean.

I would have liked to have some sails to trim and ropes to knot, at least.

It certainly isn't any sort of palace in my book. The staff are too friendly for one.

I assume you and Alina are rooming together?

That is somewhat unnerving.

Yes, we have a room in a shared suite. What about you?

To say the least.

Much the same as you, but with Buffy. It's almost as if someone knew to assign us that way, which... again, somewhat unnerving.

Admittedly, you weren't being very subtle. However - it still implies that someone has been watching.

The good news there is that I wasn't aiming for subtle. I also happen to be an overall suspicious variety of bastard, so there is that.

In your defense, you've had good reason to be.

I appreciate the acknowledgement. It does interfere with trust when so many people would prefer you dead.

Assigning you to the same room as your lover doesn't quite seem like the act of someone who wants to kill you. Not immediately, at any rate.

Not immediately, no. I supposed plenty remains to be seen, but no one has died at the bar from poisoning yet. Nothing makes me happier than knowing the alcohol is safe.

As long as the food and alcohol are safe, we'll be fine.

Hi, I'm Ava. You wouldn't have to worry too much about me being in your way. I'll likely be at the library.

I have no idea where I'll be spending most of my time yet, however, I hope you don't feel you have to avoid us. It's your suite as much as it is ours.

Are you a student, then?

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

Well, I was. Unfortunately, college doesn't exist on the ship. I can't, however, just sit around idly and not study. It's not in my nature.

I heard they had classes available for the younger students, but I'm guessing that was not for college level studies.

I'm not particularly educated, by this world's standards, however, I do understand the dislike of being idle.

Which I think should still be an option, if not a requirement. I can understand how it can be a requirement for anyone younger than 17.

I'm afraid I don't have much in the way of advice, I know very little about college. Are you studying for anything in particular?

I haven't quite gotten the taste for it either, but there seem to be quite a lot of people who take it very seriously.

If you rely on caffeine for energy, I'd imagine so. I've just gotten very used to functioning while exhausted.

We grew seaweeds in Atlantis that had similar effects. I doubt they exist elsewhere, after thousands of years of selective cultivation.

Usually there is very little plant life so deep, but we have a long history of scientific discovery. I don't think it's a coincidence that my mother is a scientist as well.

Perhaps you'll be able to go swimming in this ocean and discover what plant life it holds.

Indeed. Even the jump off the ship seems dangerous.
