In my experience balls are a little more high pressure. A more casual party people are focused mostly on the area directly around them. At a ball, once they have the footwork their attention can wander. It makes you feel more watched. It's more... comment dites-vous, a thing. Maybe nice when you have an established relationship, but in early times a private party is better.
