i do not quite think the word 'pet' is something that applies.

no. if people misuse my kindness, such a choice is their own and they will not be someone i will miss when i remove them from my life.

why not use; 'someone my brother is fond of'?

until then, i much prefer being kind and helping people. all of us who are taken to this place are in much the same situation. if i can ease anyone's life i will gladly do so.
