Shopping was a total bust today. What the hell is going on? I saw somebody get jumped for leather boots.

Shoes, television sets, laptops, you name it.

In an accounting ledger, if you're in debt, you're 'in the red', because they write that with red ink. But if you're 'in the black', using black ink, you're making money. That's where the 'black' part of Black Friday comes from. Shops put stuff on sale, and open at the crack of dawn, and people wait for stores to open so they can grab the deals.

Crazy Americans.

I heard about it before, and have seen videos uploaded to YouTube of stampedes and fistfights in stores, so I made a point of staying right at home today.

Yes, and no. Where I'm from, we don't have this Thanksgiving holiday everybody's been talking about these past few days, and in America, Black Friday is always the day after Thanksgiving. In Great Britain, the term is used by emergency services and the police to refer to the Friday before Christmas, when people start drinking to celebrate the hols, getting into accidents and fistfights and whatnot. Some American businesses have been trying to push their version of Black Friday on us, but so far it hasn't caught on, thank God.

All the shops have huge fucking sales and society is bloody obsessed with money as some kind of stand in for virtue so they go nuts trying to buy things they think are status symbols to show how successful they are. If you really need to go to the shops on Black Friday you wear stiletto heels for effective stomping.
