It seems to me that I am woefully unprepared when it comes to dealing with Earth customs and norms. Altean garments don't seem to match up to what is usually worn around here, and I can't say I really recognize many of the names of ingredients used for these dishes you prepare for Thanksgiving. (Cooking was, unfortunately, never my area of expertise anyway.) Is there a beginner's manual somewhere for this sort of thing or perhaps someone willing to help?

i am familiar with this feeling, so i understand. learning entirely new customs is certainly odd. but there are classes here, and a library full of books.

i can be of no help on the cookin front, as it was never something i needed to know. i am still not entirely sure on the holiday or i's purpose either.

They have classes? You mean for those who are not from Earth or just in general?

I've been told it is mostly about food.

general classes, but they do brush on the things people consider normal.

that's a little odd, but somewhat understandable.

Earth is full of odd things, isn't it?

oh yes. some are understandable, some not so much. i always feel one step behind, and i am not used to that.

There really should be a class then.

maybe there is one and i have yet to find it. or if there isn't one, perhaps there are people to approach to ask about it. it might do well for people like us, who come from such different places.

That sounds like an excellent idea.

On my ship, we have lessons for anyone who would like to learn Altean.

I intend to help. I can't promise my cooking will be any good but I definitely plan to be part of the prep.

I'd hope so. If I didn't get help, there would be not much of a dinner.

Would you like to sit down together and perhaps come up with a battle plan?

It wouldn't hurt.

I hope you don't feel obligated to do this. I appreciate you allowing us to have it at your home.

I have a few recipes I googled that seem within the beginners skill set, which is where I'm sitting.

This has been Shiro's home as well. It's no trouble.

Best ways to learn about clothing are probably either just running searches on "street style" and looking at the pictures or going somewhere bigger than Tumbleweed and people watching. Try Pinterest. You pay attention to enough people and you get a pretty good idea of what's in fashion eventually.

I'm not sure if what I just found is my style.

Some of it looks a bit janky to me but I usually go pretty simple. Okay, maybe some style round ups.

https://www.enkiverywell.com/types-of-fashion-styles.html
https://www.herinterest.com/types-of-fashion-styles/

This is more for if you have a bunch of clothes already but they could be helpful.

Or you could try some quizzes for finding your style.

I'm going to assume it's not the space mall, and I will very easily get lost in this one.

It's not the space mall, but it's kinda like it? And I don't actually know where the nearest mall is, but we're going to find it and go.

When I'm back.

...and when I have money again.

There's $50 a week for food, $100 a month for clothes and whatever else. Keith and I just lumped ours together until it ran out...

You'll get the hang of it.

Maybe there's some intro to cooking books that might help? With the ingredients and stuff. Or we can help. We're not Hunk, but between the bunch of us we should be able to explain most of them.

That sounds like a good idea. If that's covered, I can use a point in the right direction to buy more than just two pieces of clothing.

You might have better luck with Lance there. Someone wanted to know where the other half of my jacket was which I think was meant to be an insult.

It's not a half-jacket. It's a full jacket. Does no one realize how annoying long jackets are when you have to climb on and off things?

[info]thesharpshooter

I don't think most people consider that when they buy a jacket. Because most people don't climb on and off things in their jacket.
