I was about to announce to the scant number of you who might care that I enlisted with the military just the other day, but that isn't half as exciting as the box I found at my door today.

Has someone been gifting pets?

I found one on my doorstep too. Actually, there were four boxes, each with our names on them.

I brought mine inside, but I haven't opened mine yet. But I can hear it moving.

Really? There were two other boxes for Alina and Mal, but I minded my manners.

It looks like someone made an attempt at crossing a skunk and a dog. I can't say I was in the market for either, pet-wise.

Yeah, it's making this noise like it's talking to itself.

We did this baby egg thing where you were supposed to take care of it for a week, but it turns out, the eggs were evil and I killed mine. And a lot of people's. And the mama. Me and pets not good.

Basically.


If you expose it to the sun, you'll kill it.
If you get it wet, it will multiply.
If you feed it after midnight, it will turn into a Gremlin and that's bad.

What made you decide to work with them?

No, you're not getting away with that either. My specialty is tracking and hunting creatures, not taking care of them. One is more than enough for me, especially considering the consequences I've just read for breaking their rules.

A thorough understanding of how much one needs money to sustain oneself in the world. I thought through my options, and usurping government officials in a bid for power felt less viable on the whole, as well. Besides, now if any familiar faces arrive, I get first crack at conversation with them.

"May turn violently evil for seemingly inevitable reasons"? Never a dull moment.

I suppose those are logical reasons. I just know if I joined them, I'd end up a traitor to a second military somehow.

On the plus side, one of their weaknesses is bright light. If it comes to it, we know someone who could help with that.

I'm not sure. I've never had a pet before. Maybe we should contain them in one room and let them wander free, see what they do? There's no way that could end badly, right?

It seemed better to ask than to be taken by surprise at the worst possible moment.

I vote we put them all in a room, and block the door from the outside until the experts come to retrieve them. Perhaps Alina can put a bit of light in the cracks around the door to dissuade them from trying to come through.
