Yorkshire Gold is a godsend.

FILTERED FROM MUGGLES
I've finally calmed down to the point where I can shift again.
Though being in quarantine is still bollocks. One more day and I'm free.

George will do.

Some people would consider me a wizard, I suppose. How would you define one?

I'm James.

A bloke with magic?

Pleasure.

Then yes, I'm a wizard. I take it you're one as well? A...Gryffindor?

Gryffindor was my house in school. The house for the brave and chivalrous. It doesn't really mean much about the type of magic I use.

What word do you use for magic folk?

Ordinary. Everyone has some measure of magic where I come from.

What type of magic do you use?

So your entire world is a wizarding world? Interesting.

Depends on the situation? I'm best with Transfiguration and Defense Against the Dark Arts. Not bad at Charms either, and I can do a bit of the other stuff when needed. What about you?

Is magic limited to only a select portion of your population?

I'm not quite sure what those are. For my part, my particular skill is in gathering sensitive information in a discreet manner.

It's more that [...] there are two different populations, the wizarding world and the muggle world.

Transfiguration is changing one thing into another. Defense Against the Dark Arts is - well, fighting dark wizards and not dying. Although I did end up dying eventually, oops Charms are - well, there's a charm for all sorts of things. Cheering up, changing colors, levitating, locking and unlocking... the list goes on. There's also working with magical plants and animals, making potions, and flying on brooms.

So you do, like, invisibility?

Ah. And do they know of each other?

One wizard can do all these different types of magic? Is that usual? Please forgive my questions. I have an academic interest in magic, and this is all new to me.

In a metaphorical sense, yes. In a more literal sense, I reanimate dead things and possess them.

Wizarding folk know of the muggles, but we work very hard to make sure they don't know about us. We're a much smaller population, you see, and we haven't had the best history with them.

It's fairly usual. Wizards have different strengths, of course, but we try to teach them all.

[...] That sounds like dark magic.

So it's a defensive tactic, then, to stay hidden?

And that's something you learn at the schools?

Does it? What do you consider dark magic?

Yeah. We also have laws protecting them from us.

Yep, or if you're from a wizarding family, you can learn stuff at home too.

Generally anything involving causing pain or death, or possession, or dealing with dead things. Why do you possess dead things?

It's a bit of a jump between causing pain or death, and dealing with dead things, don't you think?

I possess dead things because I can't possess living things. Besides, that's rude.

A bit, but it's all generally... not stuff people are meant to do. Pain, death, and controlling people are the forbidden curses.

And you use them for...what?

Forbidden by whom?

When you've been ambushed and outnumbered, for example, you're going to want all the extra help you can get.

You said you use them to get information.

May I ask, then, what happens to dark wizards who refuse to be brought in?

A cockroach does have a better chance of overhearing something than a person can, it's true.

It depends what they've done, what they're using their magic for. If they've killed or hurt people, they'll be brought in whether they like it or not.

Possessing cockroaches probably isn't high on the list of an Auror's priorities, but again, depends on whether anyone gets hurt as a result.

Are your law enforcers so talented they could bring in someone who doesn't want to be brought in without harming them? They are much more capable than what we have, then, and I envy you.

I'd say possessing cockroaches isn't high on many people's list of properties. I find it quite effective. Especially if, as you say, I don't want to risk anyone being harmed.

They're fairly talented, although I won't say that dark wizards don't get harmed in the process. They do try to bring them in alive, though.

Do you just [...] keep dead cockroaches around for that purpose?

If they harm the dark wizards, though, are they not using dark magic themselves? Or is the distinction between light and dark in who uses it?

I make do with what's available to me.

Aurors are trained to take them on without using dark magic.

Jumping in the conversation because I am one of those law enforcers James is talking about.

Thank you for doing so. Might I ask how you're trained to take down dark wizards without harming them? I ask, because I am not aware of any way to do so where I come from. The people we fight do not come quietly.

Not harming them and not killing them aren't the same thing. Most dark wizards aren't just going to come peacefully, they'll fight back. It's true we'd rather have them alive but that doesn't mean they're going down scratch free.

Perhaps I misunderstood Mr. Potter's explanation. He said spells that cause pain are considered forbidden. There are any number of spells - or methods of combat, for that matter - that result in pain. Say - a spell used to subdue a dark wizard. But they are not considered dark in themselves?
