The thing with Rey was that a gap in her memory wasn't as alarming to her as it might have been to others, especially not at the age she was suddenly propelled back to. As young as she saw, she couldn't recall much of her life before Jakku. Her earliest memories were her most painful. Confusion and heartbreak, as she shouted up to the sky, arm held tight in the grip of Unkar Plutt, preventing her from running across the desert floor to try up with the ascending spacecraft. She didn't know why she had been left, she didn't know by whom, and she couldn't even recall who she was. What she did know? She knew she had been loved. Memories could be stolen but emotions could not. There was an impression on her heart that reminded her that somewhere out there she had a family. And she intended to stay on Jakku until either she found them or they found her. So, suddenly finding herself standing in a room with a moderate chill factor, surrounded by mirrors and in the company of an unrecognized boy was stressful; but it didn't summon alarm in the way it may have others. She was already missing information. What was some more on top of it? Still, she was already on a path of becoming a survivor, and so she knew it was likely not wise to stay in this place. However they had gotten there was irrelevant. There was a very large possibility that someone had made it so they were there and that someone might come back. Reaching out, she snatched up the boy's hand, looking to him with wild eyes. "We need to go," she instructed. And she truly believed this. "Hey, it's okay," Poe had no idea who the young girl was that was grabbing at his hand, but she looked a few years younger than him, and it seemed like the best idea to stay with her until he figured out what was going on and whether or not they were safe. Granted, he couldn't think of any particular reason off the top of his head why they shouldn't be safe, but at the same time, he'd been helping his Mom clean off her ship just a few minutes before and now he was here - and that was strange enough for him to play things cautious until he found out a bit more about where they were. "Why do we need to go?" Poe asked, allowing her to pull him at least some of the way. Whatever room they were in and whyever he was here, there didn't seem to be blasters, or dangerous people. In fact there didn't seem to be much of anyone besides themselves. "I'm Poe," he offered, giving her a quick smile. "What's your name?" She still had hold of his hand. She was fully prepared to move towards the door and yank upon him till he followed but the statement made her pause. She gave him a look, with a raised eyebrow, before shaking her head in defiance. "We don't know that," she immediately responded. Then she frowned at him. "Do you know how we got here?" It seemed obvious enough to her. They'd somehow gotten into this room, without her having memory as to how, and that was suspicious. Meaning they'd be safer if they left and then tried to figure out what was going on. Her frowned deepened. "It doesn't matter," she said instead of giving a proper answer. She didn't like admitting she didn't know her own name. For the past few weeks, when someone addressed her, it was just 'girl!' "Please, can we go?" Poe could tell that she was anxious in the room and so he decided it might be easier to go and then talk about it than try to convince her that there didn't seem to be any danger here. For all he knew she was right and there was some danger and then he'd look like the idiot, and for certain there didn't seem to be any danger in leaving the room. And they didn't really know how they'd gotten here. He shrugged an 'okay', and started heading towards the door with her. "I don't remember how we got here," he admitted, trying to think what had happened before. "I was with my Mom and we were working on her ship," he suggested. Because he was pretty certain that was what had happened. "I think I was pretty awake but maybe I fell asleep somehow and someone brought me here." But that didn't really make sense. "I don't think there's any place like this on Yavin IV." As soon as he shrugged, she gave a stern nod of her head, and focused on moving for the door. She looked fairly determined to vacate the area as quick as they could. Once she reached the door, she looked in both directions, before pushing it open. "I don't either," she informed him, though she didn't seem too worried about the fact. She cast a glance over her shoulder to him when he mentioned his Mother. Her lips parted, as though to say something, but she thought better on it and just looked away quickly. "Maybe that is what happened," she agreed. It seemed plausible enough. "What's Yavin IV?" She asked as she headed through the door to another corridor. Poe blinked slightly. He knew that Yavin VI wasn't really the center of the galaxy, but it wasn't exactly an edge furthest from either. "It's where I live. It doesn't look like this," he added, glancing around the outside of the building as they stepped out. In fact this looked a lot like Yavin IV's opposite. He still had the girl's hand in his and he wasn't quite certain where they were going to go next. "It's a jungle moon around the gas giant Yavin. It's in the Outer Rim, but usually people remember it cause there was a rebellion battle there back before the Empire fell." "It looks like maybe there's a town that way," he suggested, pointing towards the buildings. "Jakku doesn't look like this, either," she responded, her eyes peering around at everything in nearby view once they were outside. Jakku had some very minor establishments but they were near the trading posts and they weren't as built up as what she was seeing now. The heat was similar though. She glanced to Poe at the mention of the jungle. She wasn't necessarily sure she knew what one of those were either but she didn't bother to ask. She didn't like seeming uninformed. She did know about the Empire though. Vaguely. It was mentioned from time to time as she sat scrubbing at parts in Unkar's post. "We should avoid that," she then said, stopping so she could look at him. "Towns have people in them. Invites trouble." "People aren't necessarily trouble," Poe pointed out, not certain exactly what the alternative was. It was hot, which meant they needed to find shelter and he wasn't certain about just heading out away from people when they didn't know what the food or water situation was like. Towns would have food and water both, and possibly someone who could help them. "You're from Jakku?" he asked, the first part of what she'd said catching up with him. He remembered Jakku. Well, not because he'd ever been there - he hadn't been. But he remembered what his parents had said about the fall of the Empire at Jakku. It was a pretty low population planet; if Yavin IV was removed from things at the center of the galaxy, then Jakku was ten times so. And that might mean that she wasn't used to much of the way of people. There wasn't a large population where Poe was from, but the people who were there were a community and they helped each other out. "They aren't helpful," she countered. Everyone she'd encountered wasn't trying to help her. She was kept around, thus far, because she was useful. Unkar already was having her go into the narrower areas to retrieve parts that the full grown adults of various species couldn't. And it wasn't as though he was appreciative of her efforts. She was already becoming accustomed to the feeling of an empty stomach on the regular. "We can do better alone," she then added, as her eyes surveyed out to the horizon. It looked more like what she was accustomed to. "There's probably lots of places we can hide and keep out of the sun that way," she suggested, pointing out to the horizon. Then she caught the question and looked to him. "Well, I am now," she responded. She didn't know if she actually was from Jakku or not. She just knew it was home now. Poe frowned and glanced towards town. It seemed like a better idea to check it out, rather than to just strike out where they didn't know what they were doing or what was going on. "We don't really know that," he pushed slightly. "So far we haven't really run into anyone helpful or no. And the sun isn't the only problem. We'll need food and water too." He hesitated. "But I guess we could go find a place to sit down and figure out the next move if you want." Maybe the next move would involve coming back into town, but maybe he'd need to spend some time convincing her of it. She didn't seem to have much faith in people to be helpful, and… well maybe Jakku was different. It was a lot different type of planet than Yavin IV was so that was possible. And Poe had really only been the one place. He probably shouldn't assume this was more like Yavin IV than like Jakku. She scrunched her face up in thought with the point he was making. "I don't have credits for food," she then admitted, in a tone that was almost ashamed. She hadn't completed her work for the day before she'd been brought here. And it wasn't like she ever had spare credits to hold onto. What she made was instantly given back for her meager meals. She didn't want to steal today though. She frowned more. "Alright, yes. Let's find somewhere out of the sun to go over plans." Perhaps they could spend the evening sheltered away from people and then come out in the morning to try to quickly learn the economy. With two of them, she wagered, they could easily get their hands on plenty of valuables for trade. Even if it didn't look like this location was much of a former battle zone. Poe dug into his pocket, but his tiny wallet wasn't in there. He hadn't really expected it to be. He'd been working with his mom on the ranch, not out somewhere, so why would it have been in his pocket? There was no reason why it could have been or should have been, and so it wasn't. They'd have to figure out something else. "I don't have any either," he sighed. "If I'd known then I might have." But there was always the possibility of asking someone and having them help. Stranger things could happen, and depending on the town, that was a possibility. Of course, they'd have to go to the town and the girl didn't want to do that. "Alright then," he removed his hand from his pocket and offered it back to her. "Somewhere out of the sun, and we need a plan. So, shelter, and food, and also water. Water is probably the most important, cause if it's super hot we'll dehydrate pretty quick." She glanced to him with the second portion of his initial statement. He had access to enough credits to be able to plan in advanced? He didn't just turn right back around and use them? She had difficulty imagining that as anyone's reality but she didn't comment on it. Maybe he was some rich kid. He was from a different world. It was possible. She gladly took his hand, however, if only because it gave her a small comfort that she wasn't used to. She didn't usually have company. "I guess we could look at some of the buildings first and find out about water." He was right. They couldn't just run off without a plan to hydrate. This would have occurred to her at some point, she was certain, but it hadn't fully yet. Poe offered her a flash of a smile. "Yeah," he agreed. "It might be good. I don't suppose you have anything to carry water in do you?" He wasn't expecting her to have, and he knew he didn't, but if they could find some and drink it, then they'd at least know where some was, and then they could head out to figure out what they were going to do next. On the other hand, maybe if one of the buildings wasn't too terrifying, maybe he'd convince her that town wasn't an all bad option either. It was worth trying, and anyway all the talk of water was making him actually thirsty - for better or worse. "Maybe we could see if there's anything in that one over there?" He pointed to what looked like pretty much a straight four walls and he couldn't tell what it was. It didn't have a lot of windows, at least from this side, so it couldn't be a house - could it? Probably some sort of supply building, or a barn type of building? Catching the smile, she couldn't help but return it. She had an impulse to mention how nice he was being but she repressed it for now. Then she shook her head. "No. But that shouldn't be too hard to find, should it?" She asked. After all, she'd managed to forge a canteen of sorts already back home. Unkar hadn't even scolded her for wasting parts when she did so, though it had a slight mechanic taste to it during the first few days of use. She glanced off in the direction he'd pointed and stared at the building for a moment. It didn't look like it was extremely busy but that didn't mean there weren't people inside. She chewed on the bottom of her lip as she thought it over before nodding. "Yeah, let's look," she agreed. It was close enough to other buildings as well that they could check the other available structures, too. Moving in that direction, she idly swung their hands together as they walked. She only came to a stop, once, to let what looked like a very odd speeder go by. Her eyes had fixated on it, in almost a sort of awe, because it was so different from the types of vehicles she was used to. She was still glancing back over her shoulder, periodically, to look at the path it had gone, when they finally reached the building. Instead of going inside, she opted to move around the sides, eyes gazing up and down, but thankful for the natural shade they could cool down slightly under. "Hmmm," she murmured as she glanced. Poe let her lead, because as of the moment, she seemed almost shy and skittish, like one of the wild animals he'd sometimes courted from the jungles. But not dangerous like some of them could prove to be - at least he didn't think so - just cautious. And perhaps he should be more cautious so for the moment he didn't mind taking her lead. While she walked, he followed, watching around her as much as he was watching her. The building was mostly just flat walls with what might be large docking bays. And as he looked down he wasn't certain it was going to be much helpful. But the sun didn't burn as hot here, so that was something at least. "Hey, maybe," he pointed towards what appeared to be a pipe of some sort sticking out ahead. "It might not be water though, but it almost looks like the faucet we use to water the animals at home." She glanced in the direction he pointed and tilted her head in a quizzical way. She wasn't used to seeing taps on buildings for water flow, instead expecting a hand pump to be nearby the facility. But she supposed it would work. There was no other reason to have a tap in the wall, was there? Letting go of his hand, she moved towards the building and bent down beside it, giving it a few turns to the left. And then, with a force she wasn't accustomed to since water was such a precious commodity, it began to flow free from the faucet. Instantly her face erupted into a wide grin. She stuck her hands underneath it and cupped them together, before bringing them to her lips. It was definitely water. She looked to Poe. "Come on!" She exclaimed, rather excitedly. "Get some." Poe couldn't help but grin at her excitement, although he really wished that they had something that they could put the water in so they could take some with it, but he let her get some first. He was thirsty after having thought of it, but she was younger and he figured she should probably have first go. When there was a break, he reached his hand down and scooped some up, enjoying the feel of water on his face as well as actually drinking it. It occurred to him belated that he hoped this wasn't water that would make them sick, but it seemed clean, and usually water that ran through taps like this was something that could be drunk. He supposed they'd deal with that when they came to it, if they came to it. There was no point in borrowing trouble. "We should remember how to get back here," he pointed out, looking around for something that would be distinctive about this place. "Cause we know there's water here if we need it, so let's not lose track of where here is." She wondered if the tap was going to stop flowing so readily. Hoping this wouldn't be the case, her eyes kept glancing up to the boy until he finally took a drink for himself. She'd have felt terrible if he'd not had a chance to get some water himself. Moving her hands to the back of her neck, she let some drops brush off underneath her hairline, it feeling cool instantly. Then she stood and looked around herself. Her eyes cast back across the street from where they had emerged initially. It read 'Funhouse' in basic and she made a face. "We just need to remember that, don't we?" She didn't like the look of it outside. It had too many flashy lights and mirrors lining the walkway. She didn't understand the purpose. But, it was distinguishable, so they could at least use it as a marker. "That's, a good point," Poe said as he followed her gaze. The Funhouse was certainly garish enough and it would be easy as a marker. "All right, so we remember that. It's not like anything else here so it'll be easy enough to remember. We just need to - if we get far enough away so we can't see it, remember how to get back to it." Although, at night if it was lit up like it was now, it would likely stand out as well. It was something to consider. He took another swish of water and wiped the back of his neck and then turned off the tap. "Shall we find somewhere to figure out what to do next then?" She gave a firm nod of agreement. It sounded like a good plan to her. And she was already intending to remember every direction they possibly turned from there on out. It'd be just like how she had to handle getting to the various wreckage spots on Jakku. Pay attention to the surroundings and remember how to get back. And at least this place had an abundance of buildings to use as markers, even if they weren't all as lavish as the funhouse. "Yes. And maybe find something to use as a container," she added before reaching her hand out in offering to Poe. She liked having someone to endure this with. "Ready to go?" Poe nodded at that. There had to be something they could pick up somewhere if they just would pay attention. With all the buildings, maybe even something that would be abandoned, or arguably so on their way out of the town. He'd keep his eyes open, along with making notes of particular markers so they could make their way back when needed. It was like the Jungle, only with fewer trees and more sky. But the idea would be the same. "Yeah, I'm ready, let's find a place to settle in for the night and figure out what comes next." It seemed like a reasonable goal and certainly Poe had found himself in more frustrating situations than this one. He took her hand. "Let's go." |
