Foraging [open]
There were fewer monsters around at the time Zero and Fletcher had gone out to search for loot. They had plenty of food for now, but they could use clothing, medicine, and the like.

Unfortunately, it didn't stay so calm. As they passed by an abandoned electronics shop, the dead televisions lining the front window suddenly sprung to life, blaring static. Fletcher jumped and let out a small shriek.

And then, the monsters came. Fletcher clung to the bag he was carrying and stepped behind Zero. This wasn't good.

Suzaku had worried about taking Fletcher out but the monsters were quieter and fewer and he worried about the boy being stuck all day in the apartment. He was however regretting his decision. Fletcher's shriek at the television had Suzaku moving closer to him and then the monsters came.

Suzaku reached round to keep Fletcher behind him and backed them up against a wall. The monsters were getting closer and Suzaku bent down slightly and began to pull Fletcher up.

"Get on my back."

As soon as Suzaku said so, Fletcher dropped the bag and climbed up on his back, clinging tightly thanks to years of practice, a.k.a. piggyback rides by Russel.

He knew Suzaku was strong, but could they really make it? This looked bad.

Once Fletcher was secure Suzaku drew his gun. "Hold on really tight, and close your eyes if you want. Don't worry, we will be fine." He wasn't sure on that last one, but lying to reasure people... he had had practice.

He started to run, shooting as he did so. In better circumstances hed just run through them but he couldn't have them chasing him when Fletcher was on his back. So he would try and injure or kill as many as he could first.

Fletcher clung tightly. He'd have clenched his eyes shut even if Suzaku hadn't said to. They'd be fine, they'd be fine... As long as he just kept his eyes closed and pretended nothing out of the ordinary was happening, they'd be fine.

Some of the weaker monsters fell dead when Suzaku shot them, dropping Energy flasks as they did so. Not that Fletcher, with his eyes shut, was in any position to notice.

Suzaku did notice but he was too busy shooting the others. He knew they were important though and so the moment they had a short reprise he shoved a couple in his pocket. Then they ran.

They got as far as the next street and then they were almost surounded, Suzaku made sure his back and Fletcher were facing a corner. Suzaku started shooting again hoping that Fletcher was alright.

Fletcher squinted his eyes open just slightly as Suzaku ran. But no, they were surrounded again. They'd made it a little ways, at least... If Suzaku could keep this up, they'd eventually be able to make it.

If Fletcher weren't weighing him down, he could probably have made it already. As Fletcher clung and whimpered, he decided then and there that he was just going to stay inside from then on if they made it back in one piece.

Suzaku heard the whimpers and felt bad, he shouldn't have brought the kid out, it had been reckless and dangerous and though he was pretty sure he could get them back without Fletcher being physically harmed he would be horrible scared.

This dying universe was no place for children. Suzaku continued shooting and then ran again. They were close to the apartment now but more monsters were coming.

Suzaku glanced at the nearest entrance, down the alley way. The monsters seemed to be concentrating this side and so Suzaku backed up to the enterance of the alley. He reached into his pocket and grabbed the bottles of energy he'd picked up, he pressed them into Fletcher's hand. Just in case.

"When I say go jump down and run for the door. Don't look back, I'll follow when I can. Just run. Watch the door, nothing else."

He shot again, and again. When they were safe enough into the alley he shouted. "Go!"

Fletcher took the bottles -- what were those? Were these the Energy they'd been told about? In any case, he shoved them into a pocket.

Okay. He could do this. If he ran, Suzaku would have an easier time of it. Fletcher tensed up, waiting for the order... And when it came, he jumped down and stumbled into a run.

The door was so close... He grabbed for the doorknob, yanked it open, and slammed it shut behind himself.
