Conlan's feet had begun to hurt from all their walking, but he wasn't going to complain. He knew they had pushed themselves as much as they could to make up for lost time. His feet ached, he was tired, and for some reason he kept hearing this incessant buzzing sound. He tried to ignore all of that, and it was easy, given that there were other things to worry about.
Having come across Azabeth for the first time in seven years was one of them. He hated her, and worried about her, and felt that he had so much to apologize for all at the same time. He didn't say anything of course, saying something would probably only make things worse. Besides making nice wasn't part of the job.
Then again, making nice was probably what this whole thing would entail. He wondered if the elves would accept them, would they hate the humans in the party for what they'd done? Of every race in Ferelden, the Dalish were probably the ones Conlan knew the least about. His failing he supposed, since he could have asked Faer at any point.
It was too late now, soon they'd be there, and he'd find out what they were like first hand. The trees of the forest had gotten steadily bigger, and strangely, that buzzing had gotten louder. Conlan looked around, he had never really been in this part of the country, so it was all new. New, and so different from Denerim, or the mountains. It was all very pretty, but it had a funny smell to it. He took a deep breath, funny smells were usually danger signs.
Conlan stopped, letting his shield slide from his shoulder. He breathed deeply again. He had been in enough fights to know the stench of death even if it was too far off to hang heavy. The buzzing was getting louder and louder, he could almost feel it instead of simply hearing it. It fell in the pit of his stomach, and trailed icy fingers down his spine. The buzzing almost sounded like a song, and it was as beautiful as it was horrible. It seemed hauntingly familiar too. Like he had heard it in a dream.
The dream with the archdemon right after his joining. The dream that was full of darkspawn. Darkspawn he thought for a second. He froze in place, and whispered the word softly.
"Darkspawn..."
Conlan's eyes went wide and he sucked in a breath as he realized he was sensing the approach of darkspawn. He spun to look back at the others.
"DARKSPAWN! THEY'RE COMING! MAGES AND ARCHERS TO THE BACK OF THE GROUP! WARRIORS UP FRONT!" He shouted back, trying to contain the urgency in his voice. He worried about the wounded, those who weren't battle hardened. Then he suddenly realized that of the group only the Wardens would be immune to the darkspawn taint, and of the Wardens the only warrior was... him.
Conlan's hand wrapped around the hilt of his sword, and he pulled it free of it's scabbard. He haunched down behind his shield. He had to be the lynchpin to the group's defense, he needed to make sure the foul creatures focused on him as much as possible. If he was lucky his voice would be screaming in his head as loud as their voice was screaming in his.
