Rating: E
It had been a rather typical visit with Paerel; one that left Lillian frustrated and angry and also incredibly sad. He was the one link she had left to her mother, but some days it was almost too much to bother with the man. Still, she kept to her habit of visiting once a month since she’d moved out; bringing him money. Paerel hated taking her money, but he had little choice. He was getting too old to find the labor intensive jobs humans preferred to use elves for. He hated taking Lillie’s money and he especially hated where it came from. He didn’t mind telling her that either, but she bore it silently, then passed the money into his wrinkled hand.
“I’ll see you next week, Grandfather.”
“Don’t come back.” The same goodbye followed her out the door every time, but Lillie ignored it as usual, letting the wooden door squeak shut on its hinges and rattle against the frame as she walked away.
She tried to tell herself he didn’t really mean it, but she didn’t believe that. If Paerel never had to see her again he would probably be all too glad.
As she looked around the Alienage Lillie tried to remember that her mother had grown up here, had enjoyed her childhood. Maybe things hadn’t been wonderful in the Alienage, maybe it was beset by poverty and sickness constantly, but there could be happiness found here. She tried to focus on that; the sound of children laughing and playing together, the smiling old woman stubbornly planting flowers in front of her shack.
Breathing in, Lillie started down the familiar winding path through the Alienage. She’d walked this way many times before, and though it wasn’t the most beautiful part of Denerim, it was still the most natural. Here there were dirt paths and grass grew where there was less traffic. The immense tree in the center held a spiritual importance to her mother’s people, even though most of the elves in the Alienage knew little about the old ways.
She was admiring her surroundings, and not paying very much attention towards where she was going when she was nearly run over by a pair of young girls racing along the path. Stepping aside Lillie smiled down at them, the gangly brunette and the sprightly redhead. What it must be like to have such a friend at that age.
